Yahoo has bought blogging giant Tumblr for a reported $1.1bn. In her biggest acquisition since taking over, Yahoo’s chief executive Marissa Mayer has promised ‘not to screw it up’. The internet seems divided on what this means for users and Tumblr’s future.

The site boasts 109.5m blogs with 51.1bn posts, but according to Forbes Tumblr’s 2012 revenue was just $13m. Advertising is likely to be one of the first developments, with Yahoo hoping to capitalise on 900 posts per second and 24bn minutes spent on the site each month.

The story is big news for the digital classes and using Cision Social media we can see the point that the news broke on Sunday 19 May:

Tumblr typically gets thousands of mentions a day with people linking blogs hosted by the site, but the spike is still clear. Not all of the mentions were positive, with one of the more polite negative tweets coming from Comedy Central’s Indecision handle:

Congratulations to Yahoo for buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Now all they need to do is burn it to the ground.

— CC:Indecision (@indecision) May 20, 2013

The blogging community are unsurprisingly vocal about the acquisition. Blogs profiled in CisionPoint’s Media Database have been discussing the pros and cons of the deal.

The usually mobile-focused Phone Reviews ran a story titled ‘Yahoo Swallows up Tumblr and causes a stir’, comparing the move to other acquisitions in the mobile tech world. Discussing the possible negatives of the deal, Phone Reviews posed the question: ‘Are you unhappy about Yahoo purchasing Tumblr?’ Phone Reviews’ inclusion of the story highlights Tumblr’s importance to mobile, with Marissa Mayer claiming more than half of the platform’s users are using the mobile app an average of seven times a day.

Geeky Gadgets went with ‘Tumblr Users Abandoning Ship’, covering WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg’s claim that the rate of people switching from Tumblr to WordPress increased from 500 posts an hour to 72,000. This huge spike is seen as a direct response to Yahoo’s purchase.

The business-owner platform Smarta reports on the Tumblr timeline, tracking the major stages of the website’s development from 2006 to today. The corporate blog uses Tumblr’s successes to promote its own area of expertise.

Social Go demonstrates an understanding of Tumblr users, describing the situation as: ‘One of those moments when hipsters feel their favourite band has been discovered by the mainstream, and thus devalues it in every way, even when in fact, it leads to a lot more possibilities with such a strong backer’.

Jon Silk describes Yahoo’s reputation as that of a ‘ginormous web dinosaur’, which eats companies, digests them and leaves a trial of ‘huge dinosaur droppings behind’. The analogy runs to the end of his post where he describes the deal either working and being the making of Yahoo or not working, in which case: ‘The most well-known internet dinosaur might have 100 million people trying to hunt it down and kill it’.

There is optimism in Marissa Mayer’s capabilities and reports that Tumblr could boost Yahoo’s revenues as early as 2014. What Yahoo’s purchase means to the Tumblr users is yet to be seen and the coming months of subtle changes and developments will likely shape the way the new owners are received. While Tumblr is currently huge, big sites have failed in the past; Yahoo’s own GeoCities is unfortunately a fair example.

The Graph was made with data from Cision Social Media via CisionPoint. James talked to Cision about SoGlos’ new internship programme, working online and being successful on social media.

After completing a postgraduate degree in journalism (specialising in PR), James worked at a number of PR agencies in London including Ketchum, Rainier and Harrison Cowley. Believing he was on the ‘wrong side of the fence’, James started freelancing before moving with Michelle to Dubai. The couple worked on two competing arts and entertainment magazines – What’s On and Time Out Dubai – before returning to their home county of Gloucestershire.

Why did you decide to create SoGlos?
We spotted a niche for something arts and entertainment in the county, and everything was moving online at the time we set up SoGlos.com. It took about a year of research and development before the site went live, six years ago this month. Michelle and I self-funded it, did all the project management and launched it. We used an agency to do all the website design and back office work, including the bespoke CMS which we still use today.

How has the team grown?
There are seven of us in total: three editorial, two sales, one design and one development. We have grown by about one person each year. My title used to be deputy editor but as I manage sales, design and development, I recently changed my title to reflect that.

Do you work with external contributors?
We do occasionally use freelancers but we have an in-house staff writer which works better because managing freelancers can take time. We have just launched an internship scheme and received 250 applicants, which we were staggered by.

How will the internship work?
We’re about to take on two editorial interns. They will be given training and guidance as part of a structured placement to make it a useful process for them. The prerequisite for the application is that they had to have some journalism training and ideally some published work, so most of the applicants are from the University of Gloucestershire or the University of West England.

The internship programme is going to be ongoing, we’ve specified interns have to commit to 3-6 months but when one intern finishes we’ll probably take on another. Partly because there’s so much demand, but also if we can build the interns into the team and make it really useful for both parties then it makes sense.

Why did you decide to make SoGlos an online publication?
When we were looking at the market, things were only just starting to move online and we were almost ahead of our time. But online was the obvious choice because that’s where arts and entertainment readers tend to look for the latest up-to-date information. Obviously there’s a certain level of prestige associated with print, but the advantages of digital over print include interactivity, with content such as photo galleries and videos, as well as being able to publish fresh content quickly.

What is your target audience?
Gloucestershire locals and tourists who are interested in making the most of their free time and disposable income. Some people have described us as Gloucestershire’s answer to Time Out London. We don’t have a particular target age, our style is informative and entertaining not young or stuffy. Our music section seems to be more popular with young readers and our culture section, which covers things like open gardens and National Trust properties, is more popular with everyone up to silver surfers.

How do you use social media?
Twitter and YouTube are two of our big successes and we’re in the midst of improving our Facebook following. When we publish full editorial features, they get tweeted automatically via our RSS, which has worked really well. Also, when we’re out and about at a Gloucestershire restaurant, attraction or event, for example, we’ll often take a picture, tweet information, ‘@’ local businesses and interact with them. Twitter is a particularly strong social resource for the arts and entertainment sector.

As for YouTube, we’ve got about 8.5m views across our channel, we think it’s the most popular channel in the south west. We only make one video per quarter and we’ve focused on filming quirky local events like the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling, the World Shin Kicking Championships, Bourton-on-the-Water Football in the River, and a Christmas Day Swim. A few of them have gone viral – I think our most successful is one of our cheese rolling videos which has about 3.6m video views. It has been seen all over the world and we’ve licensed it to a lot of companies.

We’ve got a brand new Facebook page and we have literally only just started a campaign to increase our engagement – and we’re already just shy of a thousand likes. For our reach and readership we should have a lot more likes, but it is an area we’ve neglected a bit and one we’re now keen to improve.

How do you work with PRs?
Most of the local PR agencies and in-house PRs have us on their radar and they send us press releases about anything and everything they’re promoting locally. We have an inbox for PRs, which we look through to identify what’s newsworthy and interesting. We have strict rules about not copying and pasting from releases because we write everything to a house style for our readers.

We also work with some national PRs, for film and music releases as well as national restaurant or bar chains for example, but we’re predominantly focused on Gloucestershire.

We see relationships with PRs as a two-way process, we don’t just wait for something to land in our inbox, if we hear about something juicy then we’ll contact PRs directly to see if there’s an angle for a story.

How do you like to be contacted?
Preferably by email because we can quickly have a look rather than PRs having to do their pitch by phone, which can sometimes be a drawn out process. As an online publication so we’re checking our email every few minutes and it’s as quick as picking up the phone.

Do you accept images?
Sending images always helps because everything we publish has a picture with it. If they do send an image, 10MB is unnecessary (even for print it’s probably too much), a couple of hundred KB is fine. Some of the images we get look like they’ve been taken RAW straight off the camera which is a little frustrating. Also, we only use landscape pictures because of the way our CMS is built.

What do PRs do that’s bad?
The frustrating ones for us are when the PRs haven’t looked at SoGlos – we’re online, it only takes 30 seconds to have a quick look. If they say, ‘This will be of interest to your culture section’, or: ‘I see you did a readers competition, we can offer one too,’ then that’s great. If PRs ring and say: ‘We have an event… it’s in Edinburgh and it’s about OAP retirement homes,’ they obviously haven’t looked at our website and they’re wasting both our time. It’s not brain surgery.

Another thing is to avoid coming at it from the angle of: ‘Could you do me a favour? My client would like it if you could put this on your website.’ Good PRs should be saying: ‘I think your readers would be interested in this.’ Our readers are our number one concern and PRs should always keep that in mind.

Take Five

What’s your favourite restaurant in Gloucestershire?
The Daffodil in Cheltenham. It’s an art deco restaurant which used to be a cinema and the Josper Grill-cooked steaks are particularly good.

What’s your favourite place in Gloucestershire?
Our new office! Two months ago we moved into a beautiful Regency office overlooking Cheltenham Town Hall, which is one of Cheltenham’s most iconic buildings. The sun is shining and people are having picnics in the gardens, it’s glorious.

What would your super power be?
To travel back in time, probably just so I could enter the lottery and become a millionaire the easy way!

Who would play you in a film?
People I say I look like Olly Murs, the singer. So, erm, if he did a bit of acting – him.

What one thing could not live without?
My little boy Elijah, he’s 20 months old and my favourite thing in the world.

‘Don’t get me wrong—some in the B2B sector really get it, such as Dell, American Express, GE, among others.

But why is it that so many B2B executives feel that digital marketing won’t help them take their business to new levels?

To answer that question, surveying the B2B entities I work with, it’s because some execs still feel that their products or services “are so niche that [digital] won’t work” or “our target audiences aren’t on social,” etc. But these thoughts don’t reflect what’s been shown to work for similar entities.’

Jurnid publishing platform allows journalists to set their own paywall by @AlastairReid3 via journalism.co.uk

‘Jurnid, a publishing platform inspired by a Knight Foundation challenge, offers journalists the chance to set a paywall on their work while also providing a mentoring community between journalists and professionals.

Created by website designer Andrew Quarrie, who has strong ties to the Miami journalistic community, Jurnid is intended as a platform for students and professionals to showcase their talents and build an audience.’

‘Now is one of the hardest times to get a foot on the journalism career ladder. Budget cuts mean that there are fewer jobs and that those already in work are clinging to their desks by the fingernails. A wannabe hack needs to be fully prepared when entering the job market, which is where this journalist’s ‘tool box’ comes in.’

The Bode Boutique will be featured in tomorrow’s Media Updates. Author Jessica Bode spoke to Cision about being yourself, the joy of guest posts and PRs helping new bloggers.

Why should people read your blog?
The Bode Boutique is a beauty blog with a splash of fashion and a dash of lifestyle. If you are looking for in-depth honest reviews, features on my favourite products and seasonal articles, then look no further. The Bode Boutique is perfect for the beauty obsessed who love to dabble in fashion.

What is the focus of your blog?
The primary focus of my blog is beauty and I love to write about lipsticks and creating different eye looks. I would say the most important issue with regard to my blog is to be yourself and wear the looks that you want. I am a great believer in being yourself and I like to express this and my personality throughout the blog.

What’s your favourite blog and why?
My favourite blog seems to change. However my current favourite is without a doubt Sophia Meola as her reviews are so informative and I always feel like I have read an honest review, which is very important to me. Also, I absolutely love the quality of her photos, the layout and design of her blog and the way her personality seems to shine through in her writing.

How often do you aim to post?
I aim to post at least twice a week, however if time allows I try to post more. Scheduling posts is a complete lifesaver and it allows me to have my full-time job and enjoy other aspects of my life without feeling pressure from my blog. Organisation is the key with my blog as my busy life means that without scheduling, my blog would potentially suffer. I like to put aside one day a week to write my blog posts and film my videos.

How do you feel about guest posts?
I think guest posts are a great thing to feature on your blog. I have featured a good number of guest posts on my blog previously and think they are a great way to help showcase other blogger’s or companies’ talents. I think they are also so handy if you are going on holiday or going through a busy period, as there is less pressure for you to get blog posts written. I love the variety it adds to a blog.

How does a good PR work with you?
I think a good PR company always keeps the bloggers they work with in the loop and up to date with any interesting or exciting opportunities relevant to that individual. I also think that keeping them up to date with any new releases or news relevant to the blog and individual is key. For me, communication between a PR company and myself is vital.

What do PRs do that’s bad?
I find that often, many PR companies simply focus on the ‘bigger’ more established bloggers rather than trying to help showcase new bloggers’ talents. The blogging community is massive now and I think it is important for PR companies to help newer bloggers and get them involved with any events or releases.

The most important issue in your blogosphere is… whether economies like Britain’s can recover from their post-crisis hangover, and whether the government is doing the right thing to achieve that.

What’s your favourite blog and why?
There are a lot of blogs I follow but most are connected with newspapers, rather than freestanding, so for example Chris Giles’s FT blog, or Jeremy Warner’s Telegraph blog.

How do you feel about guest posts?
I publish some independent research but not yet guest posts.

How does a good PR work with you?
By demonstrating that they know what the blog is all about, and by suggesting things that are relevant to it.

What do PRs do that’s bad?
Suggesting things that are not relevant and, worst of all, suggesting you might like to write the same story again but with quotes from their client.

Francisca Kellett is the travel editor at Tatler magazine and is unsurprisingly invited on many press trips. Every journalist would prefer exclusivity so if it’s a trip with a group of other journalists, Francisca can’t offer her readership the unique content they desire. For short spa reviews, groups of no more than six are fine but for feature articles, the more exclusive the trip the better.

Laetitia Wajnapel is the author of the Mademoiselle Robot blog and a consultant. She shared her views on Twitter, a social network she believes is for personal use, not professional pitches. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t connect with PRs; it is the perfect platform for informal discussions. The issue occurs when brands try to pitch or sell to her in replies to tweets. Use email as an official channel and if you want to collaborate go through Laetitia’s agent.

Dina Behrman works both as a PR and journalist, freelancing for many of the top national newspapers. She discussed the future direction of her career and how she expects the PR side to grow as the communications and journalism professions converge. The two disciplines are increasingly similar and with the development of digital media and the opportunities of owned content, Dina will be part of a new industry.

The three also discussed schedules, pitch tips, bad examples of PR (including a ‘fashionable’ purple car and forgetting to BCC) and the best ways and times to contact them.

A video recording of the full Cision Breakfast Club will be available shortly. Profiles of Francisca, Laetitia and Dina as well as their outlets are available on CisionPoint’s Media Database.

How journalists are using Facebook’s new live Q&A feature by @SarahMarshall3 via journalism.co.uk

‘Facebook recently launched a new feature which has been used by a number or high-profile journalists in order to host conversations.

The feature is currently being rolled out, and all Facebook pages will get the option by 10 July, as will all individual accounts where the person has more than 10,000 followers.

In a similar way to a Reddit AMA (ask me anything), a person or page can take questions in real-time.’

Facebook to launch video ads in July by @gordonmacmillan via The Wall

‘Facebook is launching video advertising in its newsfeed in July, in an effort to capture some of the growing online video and television ad markets that are worth billions of pounds globally.

Like online video ads on other sites the new Facebook newsfeed video ads will begin playing automatically, but without sound with the option of turning audio on left to the user. When audio is activated the ad will play from the beginning.’

‘Many commenters mentioned that it would be useful to see a similar post focusing on B2B examples and I was obviously happy to oblige.

Twitter is a difficult medium for B2B companies as it’s all too easy to simply view the platform as a broadcast medium and churn out dull corporate messages.

But here are six examples of businesses that have managed to buck the trend and create interesting or useful Twitter feeds…’

The latest media consumer findings & what they mean for digital marketers by @lauracrimmons via BRANDED3

‘Deloitte has released the results of its seventh annual Media Consumer survey and it certainly makes for some interesting reading, here we delve into the findings and what they mean for digital marketers.

Deloitte has also produced this interactive graphic highlighting some of the findings and demonstrating the year-on-year change.’

80% of 18-24 year olds have never clicked on a Facebook ad on mobile by @Ishbel_Macleod via The Drum

‘Despite Facebook’s announcement that a third of its advertising revenue in Q1 came through mobile, research by Haygarth has found that 80 per cent of 18-24 year olds have never clicked on a Facebook ad on mobile, while almost half say they don’t look at brand Facebook pages.’

Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement this morning after 26 years as manager of Manchester United.

The news followed speculation and rumour which culminated last night in a series of articles across news sites.

It was the Telegraph’s: ‘Sir Alex Ferguson must leave Manchester United completely when he decides to retire’ by Jim White that seems to have sparked the rumour mill. The article discussed the possibility of retirement and included a poll for Ferguson’s successor.

As it stands, the Telegraph poll has today’s favourite José Mourinho out in front, followed by previous favourite David Moyes and Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp. Using Cision Social Media to create a conversation cloud, we can see that the three are also part of the social network discussion about Ferguson’s replacement.
The timeline of the replacement mentions is much more revealing, with Moyes surfacing several times yesterday as the favourite and peaking ahead of Mourinho today.
These three obviously aren’t the only choices; Cision’s own Mital Patel has put David Beckham’s name into consideration and Twitter has thrown up other ex-players.

Forget Mourinho… it’s gotta be Babyface Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to replace Ferguson. #Fergieretires #MUFC

Cantona should replace Sir Alex. We need a no nonsense Manager who’s not afraid to blackout the media / FA if need be. Legend.

Whoever gets the job, they’ll have big boots to fill. Ferguson has won 38 trophies with the club including two Champion’s League titles and five FA Cups. His legendary status among his fans is clear across all social media.

The hashtag #thankyousiralex has been trending for most of the morning, and joins ‘legend’, ‘thank’, ‘greatest’ and ‘best’ in the largely positive conversation cloud.

If you’re a fan of football, you’ll likely have an opinion on Sir Alex Ferguson, but whether you loved him or hated him, it is clear that he made a huge impact on English football as we know it today.
