Guardian News & Media announces editorial shake-up

Guardian News & Media has announced a major editorial shake-up of its senior management across its UK, US and Australian operations.

Janine Gibson, editor-in-chief of Guardian US, will move to London where she will assume the role of a deputy editor of Guardian News & Media and editor-in-chief of theguardian.com. Janine, led Guardian US as it broke a series of stories based on documents obtained from the former national security contractor Edward J. Snowden.

According to the statement issued by the publication, Janine’s new role will see her accelerating the next stage of the Guardian’s digital transformation.

Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of Guardian News & Media, said: ‘Janine has done an extraordinary job launching and editing Guardian US. She has pioneered award-winning, agenda-setting digital journalism, assembled a first-rate team, and built a hugely significant audience in the US. With her unparalleled experience of digital journalism, she is perfectly placed to spearhead the next phase of the Guardian’s digital journey.’

Janine will be replaced by Katharine Viner, currently editor-in-chief of Guardian Australia and a deputy editor of Guardian News & Media. Katherine will move to New York from Sydney, but will continue as deputy editor of the group. Both will take up their new roles this summer.

Meanwhile, Emily Wilson, network editor of Guardian.com, will take on Katherine’s role as editor of Guardian Australia and Stuart Millar, currently deputy editor of Guardian US, will move to London as head of news.
