News & Current Affairs

Newspapers

  • John Witherow, editor of The Sunday Times, has been appointed acting editor of The Times. Martin Ivens, formerly deputy editor at The Sunday Times, has been appointed acting editor of the title. The Independent National Directors of Times Newspapers Holdings did not accept News Corporation’s nominations as permanent appointments.

  • Dan Sabbagh has been appointed national news editor at the Guardian. Sabbagh, who was previously head of media and technology, replaces Dan Roberts. Roberts is moving to the US to be the Guardian’s Washington bureau chief.

  • Brian Hossack has been appointed acting editor of the Greenock Telegraph as a result of Anne Caine‘s departure. A schedule to appoint a permanent editor is yet to be put in place.

  • Gemma Fraser has been appointed assistant news editor at the Edinburgh Evening News.

  • David Ford has been appointed local government reporter for the Halifax Courier. David has replaced Michael Peel who has left the paper.

  • Nikki Mitchell has joined the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express as a reporter until May.  

  • Rachael Wheeler is leaving her role as deputy editor of the Daily Mirror’s 3am on 15 February. Rachael is moving to Singapore and will be available for freelance features (r.wheeler1787@gmail.com).

  • Dave Gooderham has left his role of sports writer at the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star. Dave has been appointed communications manager at Ormiston Children and Families Trust.  

  • Manchester Evening News has launched a new website in order to make it more accessible from mobile devices. New features include more ‘topic’ pages so stories are grouped together by person, organisation or relevance; full-screen picture galleries; and a ‘What’s On’ listings service detailing things to do in different Manchester areas.

  • The Dewsbury Reporter has been redesigned with, ‘fresher headlines, body type and layouts’. The paper has also invested in content and will now have a news focus, greater coverage of junior sport and a rebranded entertainments guide.

  • The Benefit Scrounging Scum blog covers bureaucracy, social affairs, government and politics. The blog has an archive dating back to May 2007 and can be found on Twitter @BendyGirl.

Fashion, Lifestyle & Entertainment

  • Just Opened London has launched in beta. The site covers bars, restaurants, hotels, exhibitions, plays and shops that have opened recently in the capital.

  • Lorna East has been appointed publisher of the Immediate Media Food Group. Lorna will be responsible for Good Food and olive magazine.

Magazines

  • Charlotte Richardson has been appointed editor of Archant’s Somerset Life magazine.

  • Immediate Media has relaunched Cloth magazine following a six-month redesign process. Previously a quarterly magazine, Cloth is now published 13 times a year in a larger format and with 16 extra pages. 

Blog Spotlight

  • The Baba Blog covers parenting tips, new mothers and fathers, fun activities, children’s fashion and lifestyle. The blog can be found on Twitter @thebabablog.  

Business & Finance

Newspapers 

  • Andrew Oxlade has been appointed personal finance editor for the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and the Telegraph website.

  • Jessica Winch has been appointed personal finance reporter for the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph. 

Magazines

  • David Strydom has been appointed editor of Premises & Facilities Management magazine. David replaces Tim Fryer who has left after two years at the title.

  • Campaign magazine is relaunching on 1 February with a new format in print and an enhanced digital app. The print magazine will focus on analysis and showcasing the industry’s people and creative output – it will contain fewer news stories.

  • The Money is the way blog covers investment banking, interest rates, hedge funds and capital management. The blog has an archive dating back to February 2007 and shares an extensive blog roll.

Health, Science & Technology

  • Rob Osborne has been appointed health reporter at ITV Wales.

Online

  • Neil Long has been appointed editor of Edge-Online. Neil has been at Future since 2008 and was most recently special projects editor – games.  

  • Nathan Brown has been appointed games editor across the whole of the Edge brand.

Blog Spotlight

  • The Binary Moon blog covers web design, game development, entertainment and entrepreneurship. The blog has an archive dating back to March 2005 and author Ben Gillbanks can be found on Twitter @binarymoon. In August 2012, Binary Moon ranked 6th in Cision’s Top 10 UK Technology Blogs.

Around the World

  • BioMed Central has announced the launch of the Journal of Eating Disorders (Australia).  Journal of Eating Disorders is co-edited by Professor Phillipa Hay, University of Western Sydney and Professor Stephen Touyz, University of Sydney.

  • Sam Sokol has been appointed Jewish World correspondent at the Jerusalem Post (Sam@jpost.com).

  • Tom Steinfort has joined Nine News Sydney as a reporter.

  • Don Edoardo Viganò has been appointed director at Centro Televisivo Vaticano (ctv@ctv.va).

  • Kavitha Iyer has been appointed metro editor at Mumbai DNA (Daily News & Analysis).

  • Gavin Prins has resigned as entertainment reporter at South African Sunday newspaper Rapport and is now freelance.

  • Bauer Media Group, Hearst Magazines International and Lagardère Active have announced the launch of ELLE Australia. The first issue, October, will be on sale in September. The website, ELLE.com.au, will launch in August.
