What: Some young girls are interested in princesses and unicorns, while others in fashion, writing or music. Then there are the girls that are interested in science. Although engineering is a field still mainly dominated by men, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day encourages young girls to pursue the science of engineering.
Background: Dedicated to Sally Ride, the first female astronaut to go into space, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is meant to help girls break down walls and take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
Story Pitch: A variety of groups and organizations can work to promote Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Science teachers, both in high school and elementary school, will want to encourage their female students to take an active interest in science. In addition, theme parks and engineering-related museums may want to open the day to girls for a discount, while offering information on how physics and engineering make theme parks and rides possible. Colleges, especially ones that focus on engineering majors, can promote women in engineering, while engineering-related businesses can get into recruitment mode and offer girls a chance to learn more about what they do.
Story Hook: According to the National Science Foundation, more women than men graduate from college with bachelor’s degrees. Men, however, earn a higher proportion of degrees in many science and engineering fields of study. Why do men still dominate the field? Consider the following when making your pitch:
- What are some unique ways to get girls interested in science?
- How can parents encourage their children to become interested in science and engineering?
- In what ways is engineering used in everyday life?
- Has women’s participation in the field grown in the last 10 years?
Tips: A woman who has made a successful career out of engineering can provide insight into the engineering field from a woman’s perspective. In addition, a young girl who has expressed an interest into the engineering field can shed some light on why girls may be interested in engineering.
