Have you published a news release about your business lately? Don’t stop there: it’s time to harness the power of Twitter to get your story seen and shared.
With millions of users and easy sharing, Twitter is the perfect vehicle for spreading the word about your story. Making a splash on Twitter can bring you exposure, buzz and website traffic, as well as the possibility of media coverage for your story.
Even if you don’t have a new piece of news to promote, it’s easy to repackage or retweet an existing announcement to generate conversations among your Twitter followers and get more people engaged with your brand. Here are five top tips to promote your news with Twitter:
1) Break up your story and tweet it in chunks
Tweets can only be 140 characters long, which means you can’t include every detail of your story in one tweet. Break your release into “chunks” and tweet it out over a period of time. That will extend your news cycle and give people more chances to notice your story and retweet it with their own networks.
2) Use #hashtags to tweet your news to more people
When tweeting your story, categorize it by adding a hashtag (aka the ‘pound sign’) to a word or phrase relating to your story or industry. As well as getting you seen by people outside your network of followers, it will put you on the radar of journalists and bloggers who are interested in or following that hashtag.
Is there a current event or trend that relates to your brand or a piece of news you’ve put out recently? Tie your story into the bigger trend and tweet a summary, using the appropriate hashtags to get your tweet into the conversational mix.
4) Blog your news, then tweet it
Make your news release go further by writing it in a different editorial format. By inserting a little opinion and perspective, you can turn your news into a blog post. Perhaps you can include a customer example or a relevant anecdote that will make the news even more relevant to readers of your blog. Then, promote your blog post via Twitter. This is a great way to keep followers interested by presenting a new angle on the same story.
5) Create a video
How excited about your news are you? Why not show people by recording a short (one minute, max) video of you announcing your own news, and tweeting the link? Video is a good way to convey a little more emotion and show off the human side of your business – and it’s also very shareable on social media.
Becoming a part of people’s Twitter conversations can get your news to the readers who really care about it, and it shows that you want to engage with them. Remember: If you’re going to promote your news release on Twitter, make sure to do it in the context of what your audience is interested in, and balance self-promotion with plenty of engaging conversation.
