This week we heard from Brooke Pakulski, whose blog, Blushing Noir, started out as a way to chronicle her day-to-day life but eventually turned into a tribute to her true passion: beauty. While reviewing products, promoting the blog, and forming relationships within the industry takes up much of her time, Brooke shares below some of her tricks to conquering the beauty blog scene. Hint: she’ll probably ignore your pitch about hiking in the mountains!
Q: When did you decide to start Blushing Noir?
A: I started Blushing Noir in May 2009 as a way to connect with other people who love what I love! It started off as just a blog about whatever – life, family, beauty, nails – and slowly morphed into all things beautiful!
Q: You were a 2012 Allure Beauty Blogger of the Year finalist – tell us about that!
A: It was such an exciting moment to get that phone call saying I was a finalist! The competition was intense and I learned so much and gained a lot of opportunity. I’m so honored to have been selected to compete and to finish in the top 10 and also be named as Most Buzzworthy!
Q: Do you use social media to promote your content? If so, how?
A: Yes! More now than before. It really does help with traffic and I love interacting with my readers and other beauty fans. I feel like there are way too many social media platforms out there, so I tend to focus on just a few (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram) rather than try to keep up with all of them.
Q: New York Fashion Week is coming up in September. Have you ever been? Or would you ever go?
A: I’ve never been! I would love to be able to go. If I could just win the lottery I’d go to every event or conference that exists and immerse myself in the action!
Q: What beauty product would you never leave the house without?
A: Some sort of lip gloss or Chapstick – something for my lips. I can’t stand dry lips and am paranoid about getting lip wrinkles! I’m terrified of needles, so Botox is out. Being preventative in every way possible is my only option.
Q: What’s the best part of being a beauty blogger?
A: The amazing opportunities! It’s very ‘work hard, play hard’ – but it’s a gift being able to do what you love and having your family, friends and readers support you. I love hearing that someone found their holy grail product because they bought it based off of my review.
Q: What about the most challenging?
A: Keeping up with so many releases from so many amazing brands. You really have to juggle and use time management to get everything done. You also need extremely thick skin, because not everyone is going to love what you love and every once in a while you’ll get a negative comment. You just can’t take it to heart.
Q: What are you PR pet peeves, or what is the strangest pitch you’ve received?
A: I got a pitch once about mountain living, which is hilarious because I’m terrified of bugs, dirt, snakes, heights, and sweat! For PR, it’s annoying to have someone send you the same pitch three times a day (that’s happened) or even three times a week. When you get an email that says “Hello. blogger name here” [and] it wasn’t corrected to have your name.
