While Katie McBroom got her start in writing after covering the beauty beat at a local newspaper, she has since developed the skills to not only launch her beauty blog, Martinis and Mascara, but to become an expert in the use of digital and social media. Here she details the unique way she learned about makeup application and her excitement at being honored in this month’s issue of Allure magazine.
Q: Where did your love for all things Beauty come from?
A: I really fell in love with beauty while working in entertainment at Walt Disney World. As a performer, I was trained to do my own makeup and I became fascinated with the backstage aspect of my job. After that I switched gears and went to makeup school.
Q: When and why did you decide start your blog, Martinis and Mascara?
A: I launched Martinis and Mascara in February of 2012. Prior to launching the blog, I was reviewing beauty products for a local newspaper. When the beauty/fashion coverage was discontinued in the paper, I launched the blog to get my beauty writing fix.
Q: Tell us how you came up with the name…we assume cocktails are involved?
A: I decided to incorporate cocktails because I wanted to set myself apart from others in the beauty blogosphere. I thought the combo of my favorite type of cocktail and my favorite beauty product had a great ring to it! “Martinis and Mascara” seemed like the perfect fit.
Q: Congrats on being named as Most Buzzworthy blogger by Allure magazine’s 2013 Beauty Blogger Awards! What do you think makes your blog stand out?
A: Thank you so much! I am so grateful for this honor. I earned the “Most Buzzworthy” title because I produced the most viral content in the contest. I couldn’t have done that without my awesome followers who were tweeting and sharing my work! I think my blog stands out because it isn’t focused on just one aspect of beauty. I try my best to make it a fun and unique resource that people will want to visit often.
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
A: I completed a full bartending course and am now a certified bartender – not just a martini fan!
Q: Best makeup tip for fall?
A: Wine hued lips are the easiest way to update your look for fall. If you’re a little more adventurous, metallic lids are on trend now too. I love Stila’s Magnificent Metals eyeshadow. Each shade is paired with a primer for a long lasting application.
Q: What are some of the best opportunities you’ve had as a beauty blogger?
A: Being featured in Allure Magazine’s October issue is definitely number one! I’m still pinching myself about that. Other than that, I’m currently working with a new beauty app called Notorious. It connects users with influencers in the beauty and fashion industry, and allows them to receive personalized lifestyle advice. They asked me to come on board as a beauty expert and I’ve been thrilled with the experience so far! I’m also going to be collaborating with one of my favorite sites, FabFitFun.com, on some exciting things soon.
Q: What are some of the most challenging aspects?
A: Time management is probably the area I struggle with the most. Because there aren’t set “blogger hours” I find myself posting, emailing, updating social media, etc. at all times of the night. I have to remind myself to take the time to unplug!
Q: What are your PR pet peeves?
A: I don’t really have that many. I have been lucky to work with some wonderful PR professionals. The only thing I really don’t like is when people get too pushy or impatient. I think the best PR professionals are the ones who understand that blogger schedules can be hectic at times.
Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A: I am very PR friendly! The best way to contact me is via email. I love hearing from PR professionals and connecting with new brands that way.
