From the time we’re children, we are taught that fears are bad. That we shouldn’t be afraid of things that go bump in the night, or of monsters. But in business, some fears are actually healthy for you…if you know how to harness them.
1. Fear of Failure
Anyone who’s ever started a business knows that there is always that element of operating without a safety net. Who’s to say this business venture will even work? It could come crashing down, destroying both finances and ego. So having a fear of failure is perfectly normal for business owners.
And yet fearing failure shouldn’t paralyze you from moving forward. Use that fear to propel yourself to work harder than you even thought possible. Be willing to put in extra hours and 150% to achieve your goals, and that concept of failing will be left in the dust.
2. Fear of Potential
We all have that little voice in our heads that tells us we can’t do something, that we’re not smart enough or capable of accomplishing greatness. But what happens when you ignore that voice? Great things, to be sure.
Rather than listening to that figment of your imagination, start listening to other people. They can see your potential better than you, and they wouldn’t lie. So know that you are capable of achieving whatever you want to achieve.
3. Fear of Imperfection
You want your product launch to be just right, but you worry that it won’t be. You really need a balance here because in reality, perfection isn’t possible.
But this fear can drive you forward to get as close as you can to perfection. It can help you set high quality control standards so that whatever you produce is sublime and will please your customers. Accept no substandard work.
4. Fear of Inexperience
We all start out knowing less than we will in the future about our businesses. But it can feel intimidating to enter a market where others are knowledgeable experts in the field. This fear can hold you back from closing the sale, because people can read your insecurities.
Use this as impetus to learn everything you can about your industry, about other players, and about technologies that can make you more competitive. Know that it will take time, but if you’re dedicated, you too can become a thought leader.
Fears are natural. It’s what you do with them that will determine whether they help or hinder you.
