With the year winding down and Twitter and Facebook publishing their top trends for the 2010, I decided to forego my final blog post on ROI, and do a quick analysis on what the blog world is showing in relation to the “stream of thought” media in status updates and tweets. I find these lists interesting because it tells me a lot about how or where I’m plugged into within the social sphere. If you haven’t seen these lists yet, you should take a peek over at:
The most surprising of the top trends is Facebook’s #1 meme: HMU. Until they published their post, I had no idea what this was, nor had I run into this acronym in my own experiences online. Perhaps it’s the people I run with, or the content that I pay attention to, but either way, I was completely surprised. So I asked myself, what would you be talking about to get people to “HMU?” It seems that common, recent themes include:
- Selling devices (like mobile phones)
- Telling people to HMU via BBM (Blackberry Messenger)
- Partying or hanging out
So it got me thinking, well, “what else are we (or more specifically, me) missing?” Since the 2010 trends are out on Facebook and Twitter, I decided to dive into the blog world. Unsurprisingly, these show a nearly overlapping set of trends at the top of the list when you compare 2010 to 2009. Some of the top trends on blogs include:
- iPhone 4
- Google Android
- Oil Spill
- Windows Phone 7
- World Cup
- Justin Beiber
- Toy Story
Since it looks like the lists that have already been published, I asked the flip question. What have we moved on from since 2009 through 2010? Some of the strong down trends include:
- Obama (Particularly with respect to Stimulus Program and Recession)
- The Watchmen
- Bush Administration
- Perez Hilton
- Swine Flu
- Rush Limbaugh
- Xbox 360 and PS3
- Michael Jackson
- American Idol
Perhaps we’ve moved from our frustrations with the economy and are looking ahead again? Has the Console Wars turned into the Game Wars? Are smartphones that much more interesting than the current political landscape?
Well, I’m not sure. But if you’d like us to do a deeper, more quantitative analysis, then HMU.
