Weekly Feature for Fashion & Beauty Fanatics: Q&A with Meghan Donovan of WIT & Whimsy

Handling Comms During COVID-19? We've compiled our best resources.

As a Windy City-turned-Bay Area-turned-Big Apple gal, fashion blogger Meghan Donovan spent a lot of time in some of our nation’s busiest hubs–all the while following her love for style. Even before pursuing her career as a public relations pro, Meghan decided to launch her blog, WIT & Whimsy, as a creative outlet, and hasn’t looked back since. Read on to learn about her “second full-time job” as a fashion blogger, her tips for other PR pros, and what she sees as this summer’s go-to look.

Q: When did you decide to create and launch your blog, WIT & Whimsy?
A: I started WIT & Whimsy back in 2006 to have a creative outlet where I could talk about the things I loved – fashion inspiration, beauty products and personal style. The platform has now afforded me such amazing opportunities and working with brands I love while meeting fellow bloggers have been some of the most memorable and rewarding experiences.

Q: Is professional blogging your career, or do you consider it more of a hobby?
A: I consider it my second full-time job! I work in public relations as my profession, so blogging for me happens early in the morning or late at night–but finding the time to do so is very worthwhile.

Q: Tell us a little about your background!
I’m from Chicago originally and headed west to Northern California for college. After graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in Communications, I headed to San Francisco for nearly four years before making the leap to move to New York City. I love that having a blog helps document all that’s happening in your life, and it’s been fun to see my style evolve as I went from being a California girl to a Manhattan resident. After three years I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of all that New York has to offer. Discovering new boutiques and restaurants (brunch is my absolute favorite activity) provides so much entertainment for me.

Q: What makes WIT & Whimsy unique?  What features of the site are most popular with readers?
I like to think my voice makes WIT & Whimsy unique – I always aim to bring a realistic perspective to the topics I cover, with a solid dose of sass dished up regularly as well. Blogging often presents our best selves, but I try to present both the good and bad because life isn’t always perfect–and I showcase that on WIT & Whimsy. I get great responses from readers when I open up about life behind the lens. My most popular features are definitely my outfit series and my Shop feature because it’s an easy resource for products I am loving.

Q: What does it mean to be an ambassador for Glamour magazine?
I work with Glamour to host events in the tri-state area, try out products before they hit shelves and give my feedback and provide my opinion to featured advertisers of theirs. I also do similar work with People StyleWatch and Vogue magazine.

Q: Who takes the photos for your blog?
My photographer is the talented Bekka Palmer– I love how she captures my personality in the images she shoots.

Q: Spring weather is right around the corner (we hope.) What is one piece of fashion advice you can give for the upcoming warmer months?
A: Invest in dresses and great accessories. They become my go-tos as soon as New York warms up! I’m all about Tibi‘s spring line with feminine details right now and Vince‘s shoes.

Q: What are you PR pet peeves?
Not paying attention to detail! I have received so many pitches that have hundreds of editors on CC (sharing everyone’s contact details?! Yikes!) or pitches addressed to “Melissa” or “Mary”. When you take the extra time to personalize a pitch–make note of a recent post or recommend how your client would work within my blog–I am so much more apt to reply to you and want to establish a working relationship.

Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
Similar to above, tailored pitches go a long way. As do in-person meetings–it’s so much easier to find organic ways to work together once you know the blogger behind the actual blog.
