WordPress remains a top content marketing platform for many companies. Last year, WordPress revealed that there is now a WordPress site for every 101 people alive.

WordPress succeeds in large part because of its ability to use plugins to augment primary capabilities. Plugins are mini applications that add a new capability to a WordPress site. Some plugins are more experimental than others, but well-rated plugins tend to be extremely stable, particularly those created by established social media companies.

Here are 10 must-have plugins for content marketers looking to increase their WordPress functionality.

1) Akismet Fights Spam

Who likes spam? No one, and no content marketer likes finding and moderating comments in a sea of spam. Akismet is the primary go-to spam filter for WordPress comments, making it a fundamental must have plugin for every website.

2) Disqus Moderates Comments

Speaking of commenting, most content creators and bloggers prefer a content moderation system. I have tried them all and prefer Disqus, simply for its widespread adoption, its place as a Google Analytics partner, and its ease of use. Other commonly used comment platforms include CommentLuv, Facebook Comments and LiveFyre.

3) Yoast SEO Optimizes Content

Many people don’t understand what makes a site attractive to webcrawlers from the Google and Yahoo! search engines. Yoast SEO is the best plugin for new sites looking for a basic SEO optimization tool. Content creators will like Yoast for its in-post interface, which helps optimize writing with suggestions before its published.

4) AddThis Website Sharing Tools

Sharing buttons on websites vary greatly. Some folks like vertical bars, others like bars on the bottom of their post, and still others like floating pop-ups. There are many options to serve content creators, but for overall versatility and customization I like AddThis. This company has done quite a lot over the past year to add new advanced features to help content creators. Thumbs up.

5) Google Analytics In Dashboard

More and more sites small and large use Google Analytics. Now the handy Google Analytics Dashboard plugin allows bloggers to view their Analytics inside their WordPress without ever leaving the site. How awesome is that?

6) Contact Form DB

There are well-adopted several contact form solutions available for WordPress site owners. Unfortunately, most of them email you the contact, which creates a database management nightmare. Contact Form DB resolves this problem for WordPress owners, automatically routing the information into a spreadsheet that can be added to any email marketing or marketing automation system.

7) Simple Flickr Photostream

8) Polls for Posts (and More)

If you have an active social community, then your WordPress site serves as a central hub for the most engaged. Many folks would like to poll their communities, and there are several plugins that let you do that. Polls by OpinionStage allows you to create a decent basic poll for your WordPress and social communities. More customized versions of polls are available for those who are willing to pay for them.

9) Click to Tweet Buttons

Ever write a great sound bite that should be shared? The Click to Tweet plugin creates a nice quote box featuring your text in the middle of your post. People simply click to tweet the quote and a link to the article.

10) Back-up with Updraft

There is nothing worse that writing a post and then a hosting service interruption causes you to lose your work. Unfortunately, this has happened to me way too many times to count. Updraft Plus provides backup and restoration of drafts using third party services like DropBox. This is a lifesaver!
