What Are Your Social Media Marketing Resolutions for 2016?

I’m big on setting resolutions for my business every January. And no, they’re not vague goals I’ll never achieve like the business equivalent of “lose 5 pounds.” They’re highly specific, with deadlines and action steps that ensure I’ll actually move the needle toward my goal.

What about you? Do you set resolutions? I challenge you this year to do so, starting with your social media marketing. Here are five resolutions to get you started.

I Resolve to Get Consistent in My Posting

Tweeting once a month does not a tweeter make. If you’re complaining about how you don’t have any social media followers, look at your frequency and consistency. If you’re posting sporadically, it’s your own fault.

But don’t worry. You don’t have to be on social 24/7 to have a steady stream of content. Schedule content in advance, and your queue will be filled with value that will attract new followers.

I Resolve to Boost Followers by X% (the Right Way)


You can insert your own goal for this one, but set it just high enough that you have to work for it. But remember: not all followers are created equal. Just following people to boost your numbers won’t do you any good if those people don’t care about what you’re sharing.

I like the tool CrowdFire to follow people who use a particular hashtag, or who follow another user with similar content to my own.


I Resolve to Have a Dedicated Person for Social Media Marketing

Be honest if you’re really not up to managing your own social media, rather than lying to yourself and then having your brand suffer. Even if you hire someone part time for a few hours each week to update your accounts, it’ll do a world of good for building your brand’s community online.

I Resolve to Actually Listen on Social Media


Simply spouting out posts with links to your own content isn’t going to win you any friends (or customers) on social media. You’ve got to listen and pay attention to what your audience is saying about your brand. You can get great feedback about your company that way, as well as thwart potential negative PR if you’re on top of monitoring mentions of your brand.

I Resolve to Set Up Goals for My Social Media

Number of followers isn’t the only metric you need to pay attention to. You want lots of shares of your content, as well as people responding to or sharing what you’re posting on social media. Decide what matters most to your brand and set numeric goals to reach in 2016.

Whatever your social media goals are, create a list of tasks that need to be completed to move you toward accomplishing each. If you have someone else helping with social media, assign them (or yourself) each task with a deadline to ensure it actually gets done.
