Ethan Fixell has been a beer writer for FWx since July 2014. He has also covered, the beer, wine and spirits industries for Tasting Table, Food Republic, Vanity Fair, Quartz, Saveur, Travel + Leisure and DuJour. Fixell focuses on industry trends and includes his own personal experiences in his writing. We asked him to share some advice on how to pitch him, and he’s given some great tips below.
I like to receive story ideas via email.
I mostly write about larger trends in the beer/wine/spirit industries (e.g. brewers who listen to metal; the decrease of Port wine sales in the US, etc.) and personal experiences of my own (e.g. a first hand tour of the Patron distillery; my thoughts on a beer festival in Denver). I do NOT, however, write product or restaurant reviews, roundups, or highly topical news stories (e.g. product announcements).
My one piece of advice for PR pros is to foster personal relationships with writers, and avoid sending blanketed CC’d emails to many random writers at once. I’d say I immediately delete about 90% of the emails I receive from PR agents whom I don’t know or don’t first introduce themselves via an authentic, personalized conversation.
I am open to Twitter or Facebook communication as well.
