CisionScoop: Adweek has tapped Patrick Kulp as tech reporter to cover artificial intelligence and 5G. Kulp comes from Mashable, where he previously spent three years as a business reporter. He had joined the staff in 2014 as an intern.
CisionScoop: Ali Carr Troxell is the new managing editor for Gear Patrol. An accomplished travel and outdoor gear expert, Carr Troxell spent the better part of the decade as en editor across national print and digital outlets, including Wirecutter, Outside, Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, and MSN.com.
The Washington Post has added Mark Lasswell to its opinion section roster as associate op-ed editor; he began his duties June 11. Lasswell previously spent four years as an editorial features editor for The Wall Street Journal, overseeing its op-ed pages. Prior to that, he was the deputy books editor at WSJ and worked for the Daily News and the New York Observer, among other publications.
Bloomberg News has hired Rachel Adams-Heard as a reporter to cover the oil and gas market beat. She is based in Houston. Adams-Heard was previously an energy reporter for S&P Global, an has interned twice with Bloomberg covering the oil markets out of New York. h/t Talking Biz News
In an effort to integrate news operations across the U.S. Central Region, the Associated Press has named two deputies at its Chicago bureau:
- Delano Massey is now deputy director of storytelling, upped from news editor out of the AP's Ohio bureau. Massey has been with the newswires since 2016.
- Sarah Rafi, previously deputy editor for the U.S. Central Region, is now deputy director of newsgathering for the region. Rafi has been an editor on the AP's Central Regional Desk since its inception in 2009.
CNN contributor, Ryan Lizza , has joined Esquire as chief political correspondent. Back in December 2017, Lizza was let go from The New Yorker over sexual misconduct allegations. He had been the magazine's correspondent in the capital from 2007 to 2017 after nearly a decade at The New Republic.
John Avlon has joined CNN full time as senior political analyst, and will have a daily presence on CNN’s morning program New Day, effective June 25. He will also serve as fill in anchor on CNN/U.S. programming. Avlon was previously with the Daily Beast for five years and worked in various leadership roles, most recently as managing director and editor in chief.
Following John Avlon's departure, the Daily Beast has named Noah Shachtman editor in chief. He is upped from executive editor, a position he has held since he joined the outlet in 2014. Shachtman spent most of his career as a freelancer, and his work has appeared in Wired, The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Slate, and Salon, among others.
Scott Noll has moved to WEWS-TV, the ABC affiliate for the Cleveland area, as a reporter. He will investigate and cover a wide range of news related topics. Noll previously spent six years at KHOU-TV in Houston as an investigative reporter. Prior to that, he worked for WREG-TV in Memphis.
Atlanta's Fox affiliate WAGA-TV has brought on Kerry Charles as reporter contributing to the weekday and weekend evening broadcasts. Charles comes from WGHP-TV in North Carolina, where he spent the last seven years as an anchor. Prior to that, he anchored for KTAL-TV in Shreveport, Louisiana.
