Yahoo! Finance has added an editor at large and a reporter to its staff:

  • Brian Sozzi has joined as editor at large and leads coverage of equity markets. He comes from TheStreet, where he spent the last year-and-a-half as executive editor and lead editorial direction across TheStreet's three publications: TheStreet; The Deal; RealMoney. He originally joined the outlet in 2011 as senior correspondent, and before that wrote a column for Men's Health. 
  • Scott Gam is the newest reporter at the outlet and covers financial markets, the economy, and personal finance. His first day is Oct. 8. He also comes from TheStreet, where he worked as a correspondent for TheStreet TV since 2014.

Julia Turner has been named deputy managing editor at the Los Angeles Times responsible for arts and entertainment coverage, and joins the paper in mid-November. She is currently the editor in chief of Slate, and has been with the outlet since 2003; she will relocate to Los Angeles for her new position. Turner succeeds Mary McNamara, the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic and columnist who had requested a return to writing.  

CBS News has hired Caitlin Huey-Burns full time as a digital national politics reporter. She was previously a contributor for the network since 2017, and before that spent six years at RealClearPolitics.com as a writer. She has also interned at U.S. News & World Report.  

Longtime InStyle editor Kahlana Barfield has exited the magazine. She joined the magazine more than a decade ago as an intern and moved up to fashion and beauty editor. Most recently working on an “at large” or freelance status. She has left magazine publishing all together and will work as an influencer.  

Nick Martin has moved to Splinter to be a full-time staff writer covering politics. His first day is Oct. 8. He has been with Gizmodo Media Group since 2016, and before that worked as a blogger for The Washington Post, and an editor for the Duke Chronicle, Duke University;s student publication. 

The Desert Sun has hired Julie Makinen as executive editor. She comes from the Los Angeles Times, where she spent 17 years in a variety of positions, including deputy business editor, film editor, and most recently, Beijing bureau chief. She also worked for the International Herald Tribune in Hong Kong as deputy business editor for Asia, from 2009 to 2010. 

Brendan McCaffrey has moved from WSCR-AM sports talk radio in Chicago to SiriusXM in New York as a producer. He spent a decade at Entercom, most recently as assistant program director. During his time at WSCR-AM he helped keep 670 The Score as the number one sports radio station in Chicago. 

Renita Jablonski has exited NPR and All Things Considered, and is now an editor at Gimlet Media. She was a senior editor at NPR, and also wrote for Morning Edition, NPR's morning news magazine. Before that, she was on staff for Market Place Morning Report, WKSU radio in Ohio, and WCPN in Cleveland. 

STAT has hired Nicholas Florko as Washington correspondent. He comes from Inside Health Policy, where he spent the last year as managing editor, He had joined the staff in 2015 as associate editor/producer. STAT covers the frontiers of health and medicine including science labs, hospitals, biotechnology board rooms, and political back rooms.
