The Los Angeles Times will welcome back Sue Horton as an op-ed editor; she starts in December. Horton is wrapping up her duties as the West Coast bureau chief for Reuters in Los Angeles, a position she has held since 2015. Before that, she spent seven years at the LA Times, and served as the paper's op-ed editor from 2004 to 2008.
Janell Ross is set to join NBC News digital as a staff reporter covering race and politics for NBC BLK. In the past three years she has been a freelance writer, and before that spent three years at The Washington Post as a reporter on the national desk. Prior to that, she worked for HuffPost as a senior reporter covering economic issues and race.
In an effort to emphasize the development of new recipes for the paper, site and apps, as well as new ways of using visuals to help people cook, The New York Times has hired three, staffing the paper's Cooking division:
- Scott Loitsch, who oversaw production and development for Tasty at BuzzFeed, joins The Times as executive video producer for NYT Cooking. He has been at BuzzFeed for most of his professional career, starting as an intern. He helped introduce Tasty as a producer in 2015, and also helped spearhead Tasty 101, an instructional YouTube series focused on essential techniques for home cooks.
- Alexa Weibel of Every Day With Rachael Ray will join NYT Cooking as a senior staff editor. She starts Nov. 26. Weibel has been with Every Day With Rachael Ray since 2010, and served a senior food editor, writing and editing stories, assigning and developing recipes, working closely with the test kitchen, and producing material about cooking for the magazine’s social media channels.
- Kiera Wright-Ruiz has joined NYT Cooking as a social media editor, effective Dec. 3. She comes from Google, where she managed audience growth on Local Guides. Before that, she ran the social media team at Genius Kitchen.
JJ Ramberg will depart MSNBC at the end of the year after a 12-year run as anchor of the Sunday morning program "Your Business." Ramberg has been with the network since 2006, when she joined from CNN. Before that, she was an NBC "Dateline NBC" associate producer for seven years.
Talk Media News has tapped Geoff West as U.S. Supreme Court reporter. He comes from the Center for Responsive Politics, where he spent the last year as money-in-politics reporter, and tracked the role and influence of money on federal politics and public policy. Before that, he was part of the Larry J. Waller Fellowship in Investigative Reporting at the Missouri School of Journalism.
