The Wall Street Journal has hired Jennifer Calfas as breaking news reporter. She comes from Time and Money magazines, where she covered workplace issues and women at work. She has also worked at The Hill, where she wrote breaking news stories and managed the outlet’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. Calfas’s work has also been published in USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, and Bridge Magazine.
Tonya Mosely will join NPR and WBUR in Boston as the third co-host of the talk show “Here & Now.” She will be based in Los Angeles and will start on August 5. Mosley is currently wrapping up her duties as Silicon Valley bureau chief of KQED-FM in San Francisco, a position she has held since 2017. Prior to that, she had a one-year stint at WBUR as senior education reporter and host.
The New York Times has welcomed Oskar Garcia as deputy sports editor. He comes from the Associated Press, where he most recently served as deputy sports editor for storytelling. He joined the AP in 2006 as a reporter and has held various editorial positions, including Hawaii news editor and assistant sports editor. Garcia has been a part of AP teams covering the Sochi and Rio Olympics and has led its college basketball coverage.
Digiday Media, the company which owns several online properties in fashion, beauty, tech and media, has launched Modern Retail, its newest publication. It covers the ins and outs of retail’s reinvention and plans to uncover what’s really happening behind the scenes. With the new launch come the following editorial staff announcements:
· Hilary Milnes has been promoted to editor of Modern Retail. She was most recently the retail editor of Digiday and before that served as managing editor of Glossy. She joined the company in 2015 from Bostinno.
· Anna Hensel has been named reporter. She will also continue her reporting duties for Digiday. She joined the staff in 2017 and has previously worked at VentureBeat and Inc. Magazine.
Nita Lelyveld is the new Metro columnist at the Los Angeles Times and pens The City Beat column, which runs Saturdays in print and during mid-week online. She is a veteran LA Times staffer and has been at the paper since 2001. She was most recently education editor, running coverage of the teachers' strike as well as the blockbuster investigation into charter school misconduct. Lelyveld joined the LA Times from the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was Los Angeles bureau chief.
CNBC Make It has brought on Jade Scipioni as senior reporter covering the health and wellness industries; she also writes CEO profiles and start-up stories. Scipioni was most recently at Fox Business Network, where she covered health and business as a digital news reporter. Prior to that, she worked for Bloomberg and CNN.
John Stolnis has been promoted to news manager at Westwood One News. This is a newly created role and he is responsible for day-to-day assignments, coverage, and newsroom operations. Stolnis is a 20-year veteran of radio news and talk programming and spent the last 15 years at Westwood One. Most recently, he has served as executive editor and reporter for the radio network since its debut in 2015. Prior to that he produced for NBC News Radio as well as multiple national talk radio programs under the Westwood One umbrella, including “The Jim Bohannon Show,” “The Fred Thompson Show,” and “The Douglas Urbanski Show.”
Veteran News 12 Long Island anchor Carol Silva has announced she will retire from broadcasting in December. She has been with the station for more than 30 years, most of which she spent on the anchor chair. Silva began her career in radio and worked at New York’s WGBB, WGSM and most prominently WLIR radio.
Jim Gudas has been promoted to full-time reporter on the afternoon/evening shift at Entercom all-news WBBM-AM and WCFS-FM stations in Chicago. He succeeds Bob Roberts, who retired in April. Gudas has worked for WBBM on a part-time basis since early 2017, and before that spent more than a decade as an anchor and reporter at WGN-AM.
