Lori Leibovich will join The New York Times January 19 as editor of Well, the desk devoted to the coverage of personal health and wellness. She is a seasoned lifestyle and health journalist and comes to The Times from theSkimm, where she was senior vice president of content. Prior to that, Leibovich has held senior roles at Time, where she was editor in chief of Health magazine and Health.com, at Real Simple, where she was editor in chief for digital, and at HuffPost, where she was executive lifestyle editor.
TIME magazine will welcome Janell Ross January 19 as a senior correspondent covering race and identity issues. She will write and report across platforms and contribute to TIME 100 Talks. Ross joins the magazine from NBC News Digital, where she covered race and politics and made frequent appearances on the television properties of NBC, where she will remain a contributor. She has been writing about how race and identity shape American life for nearly two decades, and prior to joining NBC, Ross was a national reporter covering race and demographic change at The Washington Post.
The New York Times Magazine has named Claire Gutierrez Great Reads editor. She will continue to work closely with the news desk to program the day’s Great Read on the home page and to expand the project’s reach with readers. Gutierrez's promotion comes after she spent seven years at the magazine as story editor.
Brian De Los Santos is the new editor of LAist, effective January 11. He has previously held positions with KCRW, American Public Media and the Los Angeles Times, where he covered the Oscars, the World Series, and the San Bernardino terrorist attack. Most recently De Los Santos led digital strategy for The Desert Sun.
The Los Angeles Business Journal has hired Nat Rubio-Licht as a general assignment reporter covering media and entertainment, as well as picking up various assignments relating to business news in the region. She was most recently a social media planner and digital producer at Seattle magazine and before that served as a contracted journalist at Puget Sound Business Journal.
Rick Morgan has joined the Puget Sound Business Journal as a reporter covering tech, finance and transportation. He spent the past year-and-a-half as a news editor at Royal Media and reported on financial technology for Bank Innovation magazine. Prior to that, Morgan was an assignment editor at Tribune Media and handled breaking news for CBS 4 and FOX 59 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Nsikan Akpan has joined New York public radio WNYC as health and science editor. He comes from National Geographic where he worked as the science editor, overseeing COVID-19 coverage in addition to other types of science, health and technology news. Prior to that, Akpan worked for PBS NewsHour where he co-created an award-winning video series named ScienceScope. He has also worked for NPR, Science News Magazine, Science Magazine, KUSP Central Coast Public Radio.
WBLS-FM in New York has promoted Cynthia Smith to program director and Skip Dillard to VP of national community partnerships. Smith was previously an assistant PD at the station and Dillard served as VP of programming, a position that has been eliminated.
