Show your library some love in February
When: February 1 – 28
What: Amidst an onslaught of Valentine’s Day cards and candy, it can be tempting to escape and hole up somewhere quiet and peaceful. What better place than your local library? If you have a little love left, share it during Library Lovers’ Month and open your heart to the people who make libraries possible.
Background: Library Lovers’ Month is a celebration of the nation’s school, public and private libraries. Created by library graphic artist Stephanie Stokes, this monthlong event can present an opportune time to drive community support for libraries and their programs.
Story Pitch: Not only can libraries promote literary programs around this event, but educational institutions and even bookstores can highlight the importance of reading, literacy and libraries during this month.
The Story Hook: Many public libraries are facing such serious financial trouble that American Libraries magazine recently suggested that library institutions reduce services or staff to cut costs. How has an increasingly digital world affected libraries? Keep the following in mind when making your pitch:
- How do libraries keep the interest of younger readers who can choose from a variety of after-school and extracurricular activities?
- What role do libraries play in economically disadvantaged communities?
- Can libraries compete with online booksellers? What new technologies and products have libraries embraced?
- How do libraries contribute to online research and scholarship?
Tips: When pitching this story, provide the contact information of an active library volunteer, or a librarian who can speak on changes impacting libraries locally and nationwide.
