Capture your memories in May
What: Photography has been a popular hobby since the camera first went on sale more than 100 years ago. As an art form that keeps pace with technology, photography has become a lifelong pastime for the many people fascinated by its new advances and excited by the challenge of picking up new skills and trying new techniques. Even those who only pick up the camera to capture life’s big moments are finding that new technologies help them better share memories and keep closer to friends and family. This May, recognize and celebrate photography’s lasting impact on our lives during National Photo Month.
Background: National Photo Month is sponsored and supported by PMA: The Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations. The month expanded out of National Photo Week, which was first recognized by presidential proclamation in May 1984. The event became monthlong in 1987 and continued to honor the importance of photography in America’s cultural record, helping to further artistic pursuits as well as communications, environmentalism, science, and civil rights. Since the event was first recognized, photography has evolved with new technologies. The month now promotes advances in the art of photography and has adapted to digital cameras, imaging, and photo editing techniques.
Story Pitch: Camera and photography specialty stores have a perfect opportunity this month to promote their cameras, lenses, and other photography accessories. They can also reach out to budding photographers and seasoned pros alike to educate them on how to use new photographic technologies and what to look for when upgrading their equipment. Industries related to photography, like framing, custom printing, paper crafting, and scrapbooking, can also promote their products during the month. Even the best photographers improve their captured images with digital photo editing software, making this a great time for software creators to share editing tips and suggest ways to best use their product.
Story Hook: For more than a decade, the biggest photography trend has been the move from film to digital. Film manufacturers ended production on iconic brands as consumers went digital. Today, digital photography has become so standard most cell phones are camera capable and a variety of easy-to-use online tools exist for the purpose of sharing those captured memories. But how do these camera phones measure up to dedicated digital cameras? What new features do digital cameras offer to help keep friends and family connected? Keep the following in mind when making your pitch:
- What are good ways for an amateur photographer to learn about the art form? Where can experienced photographers get in-depth training?
- Megapixels get a lot of hype, but what do the numbers mean? What other features should someone looking to upgrade their camera look for?
- What are the best ways to preserve digital images for the future?
- How can people have fun with their photos? What are ways to share photos beyond emailing or uploading them to a social network website?
- How have striking, memorable photographs impacted our culture or politics?
Tips: A local award-winning professional photographer is a good contact to talk about the impact photography has had on a person’s life.
