All-Star Game Wrap-up – Social Style
As a lifelong Red Sox fan, watching the MLB All-Star Game is one of those summer traditions I always look forward to. This year I pulled in the social angle and was rewarded a perspective that of the collective enthusiasm of MLB tracking along in cyberspace.
Leading into the game the overall social conversation was dominated by continued excitement over the previous night’s #hrderby and Robinson Cano of the @Yankees exciting win over Adrian Gonzalez of the Red Sox (to be honest, I was less excited about the victory than most). Beyond the typical rivalry and exciting contest, the underlying theme was Cano being pitched to by his father.
Monitoring the game in a social media context, I tracked two communities: those who used American League terminology versus those who favored the National League. To provide some game context, the pivotal moment of the game was a three run homer by Milwaukee Brewers’ first basement, Prince Fielder in the fourth inning of the game. Watching the conversation of both groups and their overall sentiment, you can almost see the moment where Fielder’s home run went over the fence.
Community Sentiment through All-Star Game
Inning by inning, the dynamics of the two audiences changed, tracking to changes in gameplay and entertainment value. While certain game themes remained common, certain discussions were decidedly focused based on the individual groups’ interests:
The game’s most discussed player was also the game’s MVP though showmanship (Heath Bell’s stylish sliding entrance to the game) and beard management (Brian Wilson of the Giants facial monstrosity) nearly matched:
Most Discussed Player
The added effect of social and community absolutely added to the excitement of the game. There was a camaraderie that came from being tied into a much broader community of fans. The real-time changes and flow of the game were accentuated by seeing audiences in action and their dynamics.
