Daily Media Updates: Staying on top of the changing media landscape
This is a guest post from Gina Goodman, Supervisor of Media Research at Cision.
When I’m out with my friends it’s often par for the course to bring up the latest media gossip. Along with Kim Kardashian’s divorce and Jessica Simpson’s baby news, there’s also talk of “Have you seen Anderson Cooper’s new show?” or “Who’s going to replace Regis?” or “Have you heard that Ryan Seacrest is quitting his 18,000 jobs and moving to an isolated Buddhist monastery?” (Yes, made that last one up.) More often than not, I’m one step ahead of their gossip, because it’s my job to know these things—we in the Research department at Cision work daily to be on top of the latest comings and goings in the media, from an anchor leaving CNN to the launch of a new local morning radio show. In addition to supplying a huge online directory for our clients, we want to make sure the public relations and journalism industries as a whole realize the importance of the changing media landscape.
If you are in public relations, you know that contacting the right outlet or journalist is a huge part of getting your story out there. If a network is launching a new program, they could be looking for pitches for new material. If a reporter recently joined a new station, they may want to become established and build a rapport with publicists. Because of this, we currently provide a weekly emailed alert, rounding up some of the latest media moves from all over the country. And right now we’re getting set to launch a new daily alert featuring the media moves of that day. Anyone can sign up to receive both the weekly roundup and the daily media alerts. Seeing the latest media moves all at once in your inbox can just be a more convenient way to keep updated.
Journalists, this information can be useful to you as well. It helps keep you informed on the changes within your industry on a wide scale—you can track where your colleagues are headed, and learn what’s trending with other outlets in different locations. On the flip-side, it serves as a way for you to let us know if you have any changes of your own you would like to share! We think media updates should be a two-way street.
Along with Facebook and Twitter, Google + and LinkedIn, daily updates are another tool that can make staying on top of industry news a little easier. Changes in the media are happening constantly. Knowing who’s going where, what’s old and what’s up and coming can be valuable to publicists and journalists alike.
