After a hiatus as Oscar host, Billy Crystal was back last night for his ninth time hosting the 84th Annual Academy Awards. But how did people around the country, and even around the world, feel about his performance?
Do you remember last year’s attempt at boosting viewership and ratings with hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco and how it turned out to be a “hosts” of problems? The shot at remaining relevant to an older audience, while capturing the attention of a younger audience was a definite struggle. But, did bringing Billy Crystal back contribute to a rise in total viewers this year? According to this article, it did. Way to go, Billy!
But, in terms of public feeling, how did Billy Crystal fare? We looked at sentiment of Twitter authors and plotted them on the maps below. While you can see a larger percentage of gray dots represented by neutral sentiment, the red dots representing negative sentiment eclipses the green, positive sentiment around Billy’s performance.
So, does sentiment really have an impact on the music and entertainment industry? And how can the long-established Academy Awards adapt and reinvent itself in coming years to resonate with today’s audience? Tell us what you think.
