Adventure into blogs and magazines

Because it’s summer and the season is ripe for camping, boating and adventuring, inVocus asked several outdoor enthusiasts to dish on their favorite outdoor adventure blogs and magazines. While there are many more to choose from, here are the top five:

Adventure Journal: Focusing on outdoor adventuring, it was launched in 2008 by Steve Casimiro, who is a former National Geographic Adventure contributor and the founding editor of Bike Magazine.  “From environmental issues to the Daily Bike photos to the Weekly Cabin expose, Steve Casimiro consistently puts out great content and provocative insight. He also throws in fun surveys (just by commenting you can win Smith sunglasses for example) and thoughtful commentary. I’ve been following this website/blog for a few years now and have always come away with a new thought or image worth my time,” said Kim Kircher, author of the “The Next Fifteen Minutes: Strength from the Top of the Mountain.”

Adventure-Inspired: This blog focuses on outdoor gear reviews, as well as tips and stories related to outdoor adventures. SWS Mountain Guides senior guide and CMO James Brown likes it because blogger Katie Levy writes about adventure stories the average person can relate to. “It seems most other authors nowadays are either writing from the extreme spectrum of their sport or they are blatant self-promoters seeking some sponsorship. Adventure-Inspired is an easy-to-read blog just focused on getting people outdoors. She posts regular gear reviews, book reviews, day trip info, and interviews with a variety of professional athletes and guides,” he said.

The Big Outside: Targeting adventure travel enthusiasts, this blog offers planning tips and gear reviews. “It’s written in a more personal style than as news reporting, much of it retelling epic trips from off-the-beaten path destinations,” said Chris Dickey, founder and principal of Purple Orange LLC, a PR firm based in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Paddling Life: Published five times a year, this magazine covers sea kayaking, whitewater boating, canoeing, rafting, racing, fishing, and surf paddling. “Paddling Life is a simple, straightforward recap of news in the paddling (kayak, standup paddle, canoe) world. The editorial style, though, is most appealing. It is casual and whimsical, but not juvenile,” said Tim Braun, principal of b2,inc., a Colorado-based communications group serving outdoor recreation, active lifestyle, and renewable energy brands.

The Wend Blog: This blog is a part of Wend Magazine, but focuses more on the adventure part of outdoor activities and travel. Offering tips and stories related to adventure sports and reviews of outdoor gear, it is “beyond adventure,” or so says the site’s tagline. “They find great, wacky stories and narratives from trips, encounters and colorful personalities around the world,” said Dickey.
