Happy Birthday, World Wide Web!

If you’re a web junkie like me, there’s a reason to celebrate. The Internet, World Wide Web, a serious addiction or whatever you might call it celebrated its 21st birthday yesterday. On August 6th, 1991, the web was invented and not by Al Gore. The man that created this information superhighway is actually Sir Tim Berners-Lee and I can’t thank him enough.

From a remote lab in the Swiss alps, Lee published the first website telling the world exactly what the web is and it is still active today. Throughout the years, the website was updated frequently with information about the web and how it evolved. “The WorldWideWeb (W3) is a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents,” writes Lee. The site also showed users how they could create their own web pages.

The site designed by Lee was active for two years until the web exploded in 1993. During the opening ceremony of the London Olympics this year, Sir Lee was honored for his work with a musical number and an appearance on the stage. I still remember when I first discovered the web. I think I was in the 5th grade and I had no clue what its value was until later in life.

Since 1991, the web has evolved quite a bit. Here are some fun Internet facts:

  • 571 new websites are created every minute
  • Google receives over 2 million search inquires every minute
  • Consumers spend over $272,000 every minute web shopping
  • YouTube users upload 48 hours worth of video every minute
  • Every minute, 100,000 tweets are sent via Twitter
  • There are about 2 million+ emails sent every minute
  • The global Internet population is now at 2.1 billion people which is up by 6.59% from 2010.

Do you remember where you were when you first heard about the Internet or went online? How do you use the web today? Tell us about your web experience in the comments below.
