Weekly Feature for Fashion & Beauty Fanatics: Q&A with Devon Poer
CisionNavigator’s Fashion & Beauty Buzz e-newsletter goes out today and this week, we chatted with Devon Poer, editor in chief of The Stylist Handbook. The oh-so-adorable design of the site drew us in and its dedication to the growth and education of fashion stylists gives Poer and her team a nice community of followers.
Q: What do you like most about being a fashion editor and blogger?
A: Well, the fashion! I get to play dress up and make fantasy come to life. It’s fun; I love everything about it. I’m more then just a fashion editor and blogger, as a fashion and style director I’m styling on-set for either actors, musicians, models or personalities. I get the best of both worlds being able to be active on set, in the showrooms or in front of my digital devices writing and soaking up articles on beauty and fashion. What is also important to me about what I do as a journalist is providing readers with information that they can enjoy and are empowered by. Fashion and beauty is more then just what’s happening on the outside, it has so much to do with what’s going on inside our heads as well.
Q: How did you get started in the industry?
A: I had gone back to school to study fashion and that’s what got me started in the industry. I’m a business woman, a natural entrepreneur, and I saw an opportunity to chase something I was passionate about after studying abroad in London in 2007. My studies had been focused on fashion styling and journalism and on my return I began a website called MyCityChic. We went to every fashion show in Seattle, doing video interviews, organizing photo shoots and events. We reported the fashion news in our city! From there people took notice and started to hire me to produce content for them as well. After I graduated from college with a degree in textile and clothing and fashion merchandising from Seattle Pacific University, I moved back home to Southern California. I started working independently for clients creating content, organizing photo shoots and events, fashion and wardrobe styling, blogging, and developing social media content for clients. Now, my path has taken me to the next step, opening a new agency with my partner, Fashion and Beauty Media, Inc. a creative services firm for designers, actors, musicians, personalities and beauty companies. I’ve become the queen of content and can throw a damn good party!
Q: What are some hot trends we can look out for this fall?
A: In the high fashion world the trends that I’m loving are what I dub “Hell on Earth” and “Scifi Fantasy.” The hell on earth is the leather, bondage, red and crimson, dark, gothic fashion we have been seeing on the runways. Also, all over the runway are these alien-like beings from other planets, with different shapes and intense attitude just ready for a sci-fi fashion film to capture its rapture.
Q: What are some trends you’re sick of seeing already?
A: Studs and spikes. I feel as if it will be a long time before they go away and have been here since 2005. Plaid is another one I wouldn’t miss, but yet it is so ingrained in our wardrobe it probably never will go away in my lifetime.
Q: If you had to choose one outfit to wear everyday, what would it look like?
A: A soft cotton long gypsy skirt in a blue, black or grey and a white blouse, maybe a button down with a collar and long sleeves. Also a really fantastic belt with my staple jewelry which includes a watch, a couple bracelets and at least three rings, also a necklace with multiple memento charms on it. Oh, and don’t forget a scarf and light weight sweater. I always get cold.
Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A: It’s great to receive pitches but I get so many it’s hard to really get through them. Send me an update of at least a quarter of all your clients, a link to download an image or a lookbook, and possibly any upcoming events I might be interested in. Also, it would be so amazing if showrooms could send me a link to galleries of pieces that they have in the showroom, then I could request it or have my pull ready for pickup more conveniently. I think Fashion GPS is on to something and we should get on board; it would prevent less product loss and make accountability higher.
Q: What is the strangest pitch you’ve received?
A: A litter box for cats. I don’t even have cats, I have a dog!
