Weekly Feature for Fashion & Beauty Fanatics: Q&A with Katya Moorman
CisionNavigator’s Fashion & Beauty Buzz e-newsletter goes out today and this week, we sat down with Katya Moorman of StyleDefined NYC. She talked to us about her favorite places to shop and offered pitching tips for PR professionals, too!
Q: How did you get into the fashion and beauty media industry?
A: I started a Blogger blog 4 years ago and out of this grew StyleDefined NYC -A NY based fashion/nightlife site.
Q: What keeps you in the industry? What do you like most about your profession?
A: The constant change! I love discovering new designers and giving them exposure.
Q: What are some trends we can look out for this fall?
A: I think the mixing of prints will be strong but also the mixing of textures like brocades. If you’re afraid of the trend then you can keep it monochromatic. A black on black brocade patterned top with a black and white print skirt for example.
Q: If you had to choose one outfit to wear every day, what would it look like?
A: Skinny black pants –denim, leather or wool, platform heels (may they never go out of style!) a long lean silk t-shirt in a neutral color and a cropped jacket. The jacket is what will mix it up: currently my fall favorites are a grey leather Rick Owens, a tweedy Rag&Bone cropped tuxedo and a Diane von Furstenberg silk roses bolero. I also like to add on 2-3 chunky rings.
Q: What is your favorite place to shop?
A: Even though I live in NYC which has every store you can dream of I generally shop online for the convenience! Some of my fave sites are Netaporter.com, Yoox.com and Shopbop! In the city I like Barneys and OAK.
Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A: Please take a moment to see what StyleDefined NYC is all about before contacting me! If you’re trying to pitch something by saying an LA starlet wore it I won’t be interested because I’m about NYC designers and never care about LA celebrities. But I’ll post about a trunk show in NYC if you send me the flyer. Basically fashion bloggers are treated by some PR people as dilettantes who will write about anything but the more successful have clear points of view and can smell when they’re part of a mass email.
Q: What are your PR pet peeves, or what is the strangest pitch you’ve received?
A: Well a slightly strange request was from a designer who creates t-shirts with kama sutra illustrations on them –but for dogs. She wanted me to do a write up on my site which has nothing to do with animals! But I agreed because I happen to have a small dog and I wanted him to get her cashmere dog sweater as well. Of course my dog hates both!
