Early this week, I woke up to news of Felix Baumgartner and his daredevil leap from space. It was all over Facebook and Twitter and before I could even have my morning coffee, Felix was safe on the ground and a YouTube sensation.
Twenty-fours miles above the Earth’s surface, in a pressurized suit, and before breaking the sound barrier; Baumgartner took a moment to reflect on his life and the seven years of training that brought him to this moment:
“Trust me, when you stand up there on top of the world, you become so humble. It’s not about breaking records any more. It’s not about getting scientific data. It’s all about coming home.”
Felix Baumgartner and his leap from space was a personal conquest, a true test of human nature, and the limits that define us. If you break it down, the man spent seven years of his life training for this moment. He broke records, he became a hero, and his accomplishments will be talked about for a long, long time.
So what does Felix Baumgartner and his leap from space have to do with you, your business, and social media?
Think about what brought you into the business. Felix has a passion and so do you. However, somewhere that passion gets lost. Things are constantly changing and you feel lost when it comes to Facebook, Twitter, or even what social media means and how it applies to your business. You are Felix sitting at the top of the world without a parachute but willing to jump, take a risk, and hoping to land safely.
Baumgartner trained for seven years before he made his leap and when it comes to social media and your business, it’s important to understand that success does not happen overnight and while it may not take seven years, it’s important to be patient, test new theories, and stay consistent.
For your business to become the next Felix Baumgartner, you must think of what sets it apart from the competition. What social media practices and strategies will you use to create viral content and keep them top of mind? How will you stay ahead? Seems daunting but in order to shatter records, it’s important to stay one step ahead of the competition. You must be willing to spend the time needed to wade through the social media debris, the chaos, and the occasional burn outs. And when you do strike social media gold or find the one Felix Baumgartner moment, bask in the glow.
