Three Quick Twitter Tips for Generating Holiday Publicity

Retailers bombard Twitter users during the holiday season with promotions, and many tweets get lost in the scrum.

However, there’s another way to use Twitter to be more visible: harnessing the network’s reach to generate publicity from journalists and bloggers.

Getting a write-up in a blog or newspaper adds credibility to your business and sets you apart from the other businesses tweeting “Buy! Buy! Buy!”

Here are three holiday publicity Twitter tips that could make this buying season and beyond a happy time for your business:

1. Pitch!

Got a holiday story idea? Just read a holiday article by a journalist that you think might be interested in your perspective? Don’t wait! Reach out to them via Twitter and say so.

Effective PR entails reaching out directly to reporters and bloggers. Twitter is a great way to do so, either by tweeting at (@) someone, or by tweeting news that gets noticed by reporters and other trend-spotters.

Once a connection is made, be succinct, be polite, and be available to respond to any interview requests that might result.

2. Use hashtags

The # sign is key to making Twitter effective for your holiday publicity efforts. Look for trending hashtags related to your business, then use them in your tweets to make your content visible for anyone searching for that hashtag.

Using a unique hashtag of your own makes it easy to track who’s spreading your message, while using a common hashtag is a good way to be associated with a larger group of users that might be noticed by journalists looking for trends. Hashtags such as #holidaydeals are likely to be in high demand: including them in tweets about your promotions can help you reach a much wider audience.

3. Provide images

What do people spend the most time doing on social media channels? Looking at pictures!

Images are an essential component to holiday publicity. Upload photos, whether they are inspiration for holiday decor, holiday inventory, or festive customers and employees, to draw more attention to your brand’s story. Caption them with SEO keywords important to your business, and you’ll help your search engine rankings as well.
