In this HLS, we interviewed Kiana Shaw, the Executive Director of Village Truth, Inc.
1. Please give the BloggingPRWeb readers a little background information about yourself/your business.
I started Village of Truth, Inc. in 2008 after a bad breakup. I was lost and heartbroken and didn’t want any other woman or girl to ever lose her identity in a man. I sat with one of my mentors, Rafer Owens, Sr., in a little ice cream shop in Compton, CA and he advised me to pull out my goal list and diligently work on it. He told me to keep a journal of it and it was from that journal that Village of Truth was born.
We are a non-profit organization that values the presence of strong, ambitious women in society. Our mission is to further support the cultivation of strong women by encouraging the development of inner-city teen girls through providing the resources needed to obtain financial stability, ensure mental growth, enhance physical health and attain emotional strength.
Our objective is to teach young ladies in a 4 month time frame the following:
- Set and reach goals
- Establish and use credit responsibly
- Live healthy and drug-free lifestyles
- Cope with past hurts
- Cooking Skills
- Manage future disappointments
All of these skills provide the foundation for a self-sufficient life. Each phase of the program will conclude with a test to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter in addition to a better attitude toward their personal lives and future.
2. How did you first hear about HARO and why did you decide to sign up?
I heard about HARO at the Spark and Hustle conference hosted by Tori Johnson (Good Morning America on ABC). It was highly suggested that we use this website. I make it a habit to follow the advice of business mentors.
3. How has HARO changed the way you market yourself/your business?
Sometimes, we can be hesitant because of our fears. Getting the first article was a confidence booster.
4. How many times have you gotten media placements through HARO?
I have been in one article, however, it was because of that article (posting it on social media sites) that brought attention to what I do. Since then, one of the parent’s of my mentees nominated me for the Yahoo! Women Who Shine award. People are constantly sending me links to nominations they believe I qualify for. I love it!
5. From your experience with getting media placements, what are some tips/pointers you can give to people looking to pitch themselves or their businesses to the media?
Don’t make the decision for the reporter/blogger/source. You never know what will get their attention. Submit your story anyway.
6. What are some no-nos when pitching the media?
- Once you submit your story, don’t stalk the reporter. It’s okay to check in a few days later and then again in 2 weeks if you haven’t heard back, but don’t harass them.
- Don’t delay! Respond back as soon as they email you to ensure they have everything they need.
