Top ten winter getaway blogs

It’s 23 degrees as this is being written, and the Washington, D.C., area is overflowing with cars covered in road salt and grime. There’s still a long way to go before we start planting petunias.

One great way to fight the winter “blahs,” is to take a winter vacation – or at least start planning a getaway later in the year. Chicken soup might be good for the soul, but a warm weather vacation will make your whole body feel better. inVocus has listed some blogs that will give you some ideas to pitch for consumers trying to escape from the icy climates. It may be the “slow season” for many retailers, but the idea of being able to travel at much cheaper prices, and with far fewer crowds, is an appealing angle to pursue. Here’s our top ten getaway blogs, which we picked based on their niche appeal and what we believe may be your best bet for pitching this time of year.

A Girl’s Gotta Spa – Why not start with a winter vacation where you don’t even have to leave your zip code? This blog’s eyes are on the burgeoning “self-care” market, and it extols the virtues of getting anti-aging facial treatments in the spa and using make-up that won’t harm your skin. Best of all, there’s a pull-down menu that allows you to enter where you live and you’ll instantly be directed to spas and salons that are offering discounts.

Theme Park Insider – The weather in the southern and western states is usually great this time of year, and since it’s the off-season, it’s a good time to visit theme parks. This blog really does have the inside scoop on how to avoid crowds and how to buy cheaper tickets for all the major parks. It also has park and hotel reviews and links to special offers and other online ticket purchases.

Have Baby Will Travel – It can be hard to take your kids out of school this time of year, but what if you have a baby or a toddler? This site gives you the lowdown on everything from how to survive a long layover at the airport with your young one, to where to find a stroller and a family restroom in a theme park. Maybe they should write an article on how to pretend you aren’t related to your toddler who is screaming on the crowded plane while other passengers glare.

GottaGoGolf – Golfing vacations can be the perfect winter getaway. Not too hot, not too crowded, not too bad. Although this site is geared toward women golfers, there’s plenty of useful information for anyone interested in the game. It is refreshing, however, to see a blog that has gone to the trouble of finding “women welcome” destinations and is written from a woman golfer’s point of view.

The Vacation Gals – Three moms, three writers and three different kinds of vacations to take this winter. The Vacation Gals seem to have seen it all, and their blog gives great advice on family trips, girlfriend getaways and romantic escapes. You might think it’s crazy that one of their recent trips was to the Mall Of America in Minnesota, but they’ve got some warmer suggestions too.

About.com – Surfing – Are dreams of Hawaii in your head? How about Southern California or Mexico’s Pacific Coast? You’ll have a lot more fun if you take up surfing or even body boarding. This blog tells you where to learn, where to get gear and where to surf around the world. You can smell the Coppertone just by looking at the pictures.

The Daily Suitcase – This blog features the good and the bad news about the world of travel. When cruise lines say “everything included,” do they really mean it? Is Burma a beautiful, but previously perilous place to travel and safe to see now? You’ll find the answers to those and many more questions.

The Cranky Flier – If nothing else, you have to love the name of this blog. But when you think about it, cranky people are often the ones who ask the questions that others won’t. This blog tells readers how they can jump ahead in long lines and find their way around enormous airport terminals. Best of all, this blog links to many others, so you can start looking for airline travel tips here, then check out other perspectives with a just a click.

Ciao Bambino – Here is another blog by moms, but this one specializes in traveling with school age children, not just babies and toddlers like Have Baby Will Travel mentioned. A convenient pull-down menu lets you select which country or state you want to visit, then launches you from there. If there is a country in this world these mommy bloggers haven’t seen, I sure can’t tell what it would be.

About.com – Skiing – File this one under, “If ya can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Is getting to a warmer place out of reach right now? Do you figure that if you’re going to be freezing your limbs off, you might as well be having fun? A ski vacation is a good option. This blog will tell you anything you’d need to know about getting ready to hit the slopes.
