10 Essential Resources for Every Community Manager

Ifdy Perez is a social media strategist with a specialty in community building.

As a beginner community manager, you may sometimes feel like you don’t know where to start. Here’s my top 10 list of blogs, Tweet chats, meetups, and other stuff (aside from the fantastic Vocus blog) that will help you get started.

 1.     The Community Manager Blog

This regularly updated blog features firsthand practical insights from community managers. It’s a great way to learn about specific topics you’re concerned about, submit questions, and get to know other community managers. They also host the popular #cmgrchat. Check this one regularly.

Mashable - Community Manager Resource

Sort all articles related to community management through Mashable.

2.     Mashable

Though not exclusively an expert on community management, Mashable has a category for the topic, and has some posts you could check out to keep in touch with what thought leadership is saying. Mashable, in general, is where you’d get the news on latest social network trends, gadgets, widgets, and such that will help you keep up with what’s cool—a big part of your job.

3.     Social Media Club

SMC is a great resource for meeting local community managers and learning from their experience. Almost every major city has their own chapters, so check them out next time you get a chance. And check out their blog!

4.     #CMGR

Twitter hashtags are a huge resource for community managers; when you’re listening for the company you work for, add #cmgr to your saved searches. Here you’ll get a wide variety of resources posted from community managers from everywhere.

5.     #commbuild

Now that we’re on the subject of hashtags, this is another great way to meet people of all industries and learn from them. You’ve also got great people involved with this chat.

6.     SEOMoz Blog

As a community manager, one of your primary duties is to find the right content for your audience, and SEO can be your best pal for that. Learn about SEO best practices from the experts themselves––SEOMoz. See what you can implement in your company’s social strategy, even with limited resources. There’s a lot to learn.

7.     Social Media Week

I’m going to order you to go outside and get a breath of fresh air, because it’s better to learn from people by talking to them face to face. Social Media Week is an awesome event containing a series of micro-events hosted in major cities around the world. It’s a fantastic in-person event to have real-life interactions with the people you’ve been following online. (And they make for great live Tweeting!)

8.     Local Tech Meetups

Also keeping it IRL, tech meetups give you a chance to regularly meet with peeps in the tech industry. Check to see if there’s a local meetup near you.

9.     Welcome to the Fifth Estate

Books are your best friends, and this was one of the first ones I read when I first started as a community manager. Authored by Geoff Livingston—one of the best marketing minds today—this book will widen your perspective, and give you the overall picture of what you’re trying to accomplish with your social strategy. Social media is only part of it, so check out this book, and others, to broaden your knowledge base.

Oreo - Community Manager Resource

Remember Oreo’s Super Bowl newsjack? So does everyone else.

10.  Oreo

That’s no mistake. Oreo is one of my favorite brands to follow. Why? Their Superbowl magic will explain it all. It’s social media at its finest! Follow them, and other brands you personally like, to see what the best in the game are doing to give you ideas, and keep up with trends you need to do your best.

Do you have other resources you regularly follow or have learned community management tips from in the past? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
