Focus on the media: accuracy over speed
CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley recently accepted the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award from Connecticut’s Quinnipiac University. In his acceptance speech, he chastised the media, including himself, for getting facts wrong in stories, and emphasized accuracy over speed. He cited errors that were reported during coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings, and pointed at social media as a part of the problem. In this latest Focus on the Media, our panel discusses the role social media plays in reporting and misreporting, as well as the significance of verifying facts.
