Get outdoors in June

When: June

What: Summer is a time to get outside, and many take advantage of the warmer months with BBQ’s and outdoor activities like hiking, jogging, biking and swimming. But there are also many who do not. In June, celebrate the sunshine during Great Outdoors Month.

Background: According to the National Wildlife Federation, children who participate in nature activities before the age of 11 are more likely to care for the environment as adults. Given that children now spend half as much time outdoors as they did 20 years ago, it’s more important than ever to participate in activities beyond the confines of four walls. Great Outdoors Month encourages the nation to get outside, and to become better stewards of our land.

Story Pitch: A number of groups and organizations can pitch around Great Outdoors Month. Outdoor clothing manufacturers will want to advertise new lines of clothing, from biking gear to the latest styles in tank tops and shorts. Skin care producers can promote relevant products for keeping safe when in the sun. Environmental organizations and national parks will want to also take advantage of this month by encouraging visitors and tourists to get outside and visit parks, while learning more about taking care of our earth.

Story Hook: In a typical week, only 6 percent of children, ages 9 to 13, play outside, while children 8 to 18 spend 53 hours a week using some sort of entertainment media indoors, Nature.org reported. Consider the following when making your pitch:

  • What are some ways parents can encourage their children to get outdoors?
  • What kinds of activities are available for families outdoors?
  • How can spending time outdoors bring families closer together?
  • What are the developmental benefits from spending time outside?

Tips: A park ranger or parks department employee can weigh in on the importance of getting outside and enjoying nature. Additionally, a family who regularly camps or spends time outdoors would make a good resource.
