Celebrate the yumminess of ice cream in July

When: July

What:  I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! So goes the famous lyrics recorded by a band called the Waring’s Pennsylvanians in 1929, which give tribute to that cold, creamy treat we all love so much – especially during the hot steamy days of summer.  This July, celebrate ice cream in all its delicious glory during National Ice Cream Month.

Background: As a treat that is enjoyed by 90 percent of the United States, ice cream’s popularity as a snack is no secret. President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month in 1984. He even called for ceremonies and activities to be held in ice cream’s honor.

Story Pitch: There are a number of groups and organizations that can pitch around National Ice Cream Month. Ice cream retailers will want to celebrate the month by promoting their most popular flavors or by introducing new flavors to the public. Local farms can also promote dairy products, including freshly made ice cream. In addition, kitchen appliance manufacturers may promote the month by spotlighting their ice cream machines, noting the ease of home ice cream making.

Story Hook: According to the International Dairy Food Association, approximately 9 percent of all milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used in producing ice cream. In addition, about 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream were produced in the United States in 2011. Consider the following when making your pitch:

  • What resources can be used to locate local farms creating ice cream?
  • What tools are needed to create ice cream at home?
  • What flavors of ice cream are the most popular?
  • How much milk is needed to make a standard gallon of ice cream?

Tips: Local farmers who produce and manufacturer their own ice cream would be a great resource during National Ice Cream Month. In addition, families who churn their own ice cream at home can provide insight on homemade ice cream.
