EdgeRank: Learn how to master the Facebook algorithm and conquer news feeds
You take time to craft the ideal message and then you wait patiently for a like, a comment, a share – anything! When it doesn’t, you begin to question why? You might not be aware that Facebook ranks every status you write based on popularity/affinity (how many clicks, like, comments, etc), relevance/weight (how interactive your fans have been the past), and decay/recency (how recent was your last status update and the time decay factor based on how long it was relevant).
All of these factors combined create something wonderful called “EdgeRank.” What’s EdgeRank? It’s Facebook’s wonderful newsfeed algorithm and if you’re status update doesn’t fit the equation above, then it’s not going to be seen no matter how well crafted it is.
Unfortunately, fewer and fewer status updates are being seen by fans because of low EdgeRank scores and most brands don’t even know it. So how do you beat EdgeRank and keep your page top of mind?
1.) Create engaging content: the first part of the EdgeRank formula (affinity) is to create engaging content that is popular. In order to engage fans, prompt them with an action that motivates them to respond.
- Ask questions
- post fill-in-the-blanks
- ask for a like or share (example: like or share this post if you agree, want this, etc)
2.) The second part of the formula is relevance. How much of your content relates to your fans and the brand? Could you possibly add in some local flavor? Photos? Videos? Multimedia content makes people pause and also interact with your page. Attach a link with the photo or video that leads back to an offer or goes back to your website to learn more so that fans are constantly enticed, intrigued, and left wanting more. If you have a global brand, try targeting fans in a different region and gate posting content to target areas with different offers and unique content just for that market. Test and see how global outreach works vs a mass approach.
3.) Stay consistent. To stay top of mind in news feed, you need to post with frequency – perhaps twice a day. With Viralheat, you can create and schedule unlimited content across a variety of channels. Simply select a date, time, and a timezone. For peace of mind, you’ll also receive a delivery notification once your status update has been sent. You can also target specific audiences when posting your updates, preview your messages and more.
