7 Shortcuts for Getting Website Traffic in Record Time

There is a problem that all site owners, webmasters, and bloggers usually experience when they first get started – that problem is getting website traffic, and most importantly relevant website traffic, to their site.

I had this problem when I first started blogging, and countless others have as well so you’re not alone.

In this post I’m going to show you a number of straight forward shortcuts that I use to generate hundreds of thousands of visits to websites that I own or manage.

Contributing to other blogs

Contributing to other blogs is an extremely powerful way to generate highly targeted traffic to your website, but where do you start?

Firstly, you need to find relevant blogs that are accepting new contributors. You can do this easily by using guest blogging communities such as Blogger Link Up and My Blog Guest.

These types of communities are a great way to get started, but you can also use Google to search for opportunities by using advanced search operators.  You can use the link building query generator by Buzz Stream to generate a list for you to work through.

The next step is to contact the blogs that you want to contribute to but it’s important to understand is that a lot of bloggers get many of these types of emails, so you need to make sure your emails stand out by including:

  • Personalization
  • Brevity (be direct and to the point)
  • Why you’re emailing the blogger
  • A call to action
  • A Signature (show who you are and link to your website and social profiles)

I recently published a post on how to make blogger outreach work for you which highlights a number of the pitfalls that people usually come across. Keep in mind that your ultimate goal should be to build a relationship with the blogger and highlight how you can help them.

Mentioning influencers

When you put together a piece of content your aim should be to involve as many influencers as possible within your market.

If you haven’t come across the term ‘influencers’ before, essentially they are just individuals that have the power to influence the buying decisions of others – influencers could be individual bloggers or even companies and brands.

It’s important to target influencers is because it allows you to tap into an already established audience – it’s a huge shortcut for generating traffic, especially when your website is in its infancy.

As a starting point, Twitter is a great place to start your influencer research.

Use every opportunity you have to mention influencers in your blog posts, so you can then tell them about it and recruit their help in promoting your content.

The most successful ways that I’ve found for notifying influencers and recruiting their help include:

  • Email them directly and asking them to help
  • Mentioning them on Twitter
  • Tagging them in Google+ posts

Influencer marketing is powerful because when influencers share the content they’re mentioned in, it reinforces their authority to their audience – although you do need to mention influencers in a positive light, if you want to play on the safe side.


Triberr has been an instrumental tool in the success of my blog – it’s a social platform that allows you to join tribes of like-minded bloggers and then puts your content directly in front of them and offering the opportunity to share your content.

Online communities

Online communities tend to either be ignored or abused, but when you use them right you can generate a great amount of traffic.

Here is a snapshot of the traffic one of sites I run received from Reddit:

The key here was that a single post was shared in a relevant ‘Sub Reddit’, which is really just Reddit’s way of saying groups.

Aside from forums in your niche, there are plenty of social media sites that you can find highly engaged communities on like:

  • LinkedIn groups
  • Google+ communities
  • Reddit
  • Facebook groups

When researching relevant communities, it’s important to remember that you shouldn’t just use these communities to drop links because you will only earn a reputation of a spammer.

When you share content, introduce it with a question and start a discussion – you’ll not only safe guard your reputation but you’ll also get better results.

Niche social bookmarking sites

Within most niches there are usually a selection of niche social bookmarking sites. These sites won’t refer you mountains of traffic, but they will refer hyper engaged traffic.

For example, in the marketing/business sector you can try:

Paid traffic that won’t break the bank

Most paid traffic solutions can be expensive and yield minimal returns, but there are other options that are easy on the wallet that can refer high quality traffic.

I’m talking about content recommendation services such as Outbrain and Nrelate.  Services like these will allow you to import the content from your site, whether pages or blog posts, and allow you to select a daily budget and cost per click like most paid traffic services like Google Adword.

Your content will then get published in ‘related posts’ widgets at the bottom of blog posts on sites like Fastcompany, CNBC, Reuters, and other large sites.

For some campaigns I’ve managed to get my cost per click down to $0.04 but your success does hinge on how engaging your content is, specifically your images and headlines.

Put in the time to promote your content

It’s a shame, but the majority of content on the web doesn’t get promoted even though people spend hours and even days creating awesome content that people would love.  Unfortunately, writers spend the time to create the piece but don’t spend any time promoting it.

Take the time to use every promotional channel that you have available to you, including social media networks, and the tips I’ve mentioned above. More importantly, work out which promotional channels get you the best results by tracking your traffic with Google Analytics or another analytics package.


Getting traffic to your blog or website may seem daunting, but if you put the time in and focus on the right channels then you will get results you’re looking for.
