Where is your craic this St. Patrick’s Day?

Craic |krak|: Irish term

  1. Fun and entertainment, especially good conversation and company.

Come for the beer, lads, and stay for the craic!

             It was great craic.

St. Patrick’s Day is sure to be filled with craic, but the question is where? Conan might have some answers for you. When you’re done on the dance floor, let’s see where the best places to celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day are.

Using Visible Intelligence, I tracked locations in the world with the greatest volume of sites talking about the holiday during this past week. Surprisingly, there was more online content about St. Patrick’s Day in the United States than in any other country, including Ireland.

Now that we’ve narrowed it down, let’s go further into which cities are celebrating the most. A quick search for “St. Patrick’s Day,” “cities” and “celebration” brought in this list.

Boston, Chicago and York (for New York, I’m guessing) were among the top associations for cities. On that note, the annual dyeing of the Chicago River took place on Saturday which you can read more about here.

What about New York and Boston though? New York City has one of largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country, but there’s a lot of controversy right now surrounding the exclusion of LGBT groups. Heineken and Sam Adams withdrew their sponsorships, and the Mayors of NYC and Boston are talking as well.

So are New York and Boston really among the best cities to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year? Maybe not. You can see the difference in sentiment relating to some linked topics like “St. Patrick’s Day,” “New York” and “Boston.”

Past 24 hours:

We’re talking about a 10% decrease in positive sentiment here and an increase of 8% and 3% in negative and mixed sentiment, respectively. Much of this content is coming from news sources and blogs as seen below:

Still, many are celebrating, or preparing to celebrate Irish culture whether they’re in the United States or across the globe.

8St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday to celebrate with good friends, food and drinks, so here’s to a great one filled with craic wherever you may be!
