Autism Society of NC: Vocus Helps Bring Unprecedented Reform!

Just weeks before a key legislative session in April 2013, the Autism Society of North Carolina upgraded its communication strategy from a variety of tools to the Vocus Marketing Suite.

The Autism Society of NC helps individuals and families affected by autism through advocacy, education and direct services.

Almost immediately, David Laxton, Director of Communications, and his team launched an email campaign to renew the organization’s fight for autism insurance reform.

“Part of our job is to increase awareness about autism spectrum disorder among politicians and policymakers,” says David.

“We use social media, email and news releases to drive people to our website. These platforms help us deliver the information people need to make informed decisions.”

“We had never been able to get the North Carolina House of Representatives to vote on it before,” David continues.

“Prior to our state’s legislative session, we used Vocus to segment our email lists and deliver personalized messages to encourage folks to contact their representatives.”

The email campaigns worked; the reform earned a vote in the House.

As legislators discussed the issue and voted, David observed and kept supporters engaged using the Marketing Suite’s all-in-one dashboard.

“The Vocus Marketing Suite let us communicate in real time,” David says. “As I tweeted quotes and news from the House floor, I had emails and Facebook status updates prepared that reflected potential outcomes. Even House members retweeted us!

“In the end, the floor vote was 105-7 for the change! It was bipartisan and unprecedented.”

“We couldn’t have accomplished what we did without Vocus,” David says.

One of the best parts about the success, David adds, is how easy Vocus makes it to track and present results.

“With an organization as large as ours, you must determine whether you’re using resources efficiently,” he says.

“Vocus delivers concrete numbers and reports to present to our board to show them that we’re being effective and good stewards of the resources we allocate.

“Vocus is convenient, it’s proven and it’s versatile. With it, you can only be more effective at your job.”
