Pop up the tent in June and get camping

Handling Comms During COVID-19? We've compiled our best resources.

CampingpitchpicWhen: June

What: When the weather starts to heat up, outdoor activities — and summer vacations — get into full swing, and camping always has a place on the summer agenda. Whether it’s hitting the beach or venturing into the woods, celebrate National Camping Month this June.

Background: Sponsored by the Outdoor Foundation and The North Face, this event was created to inspire people of all ages to get outside. But as with any activity, there are things to keep in mind. Camping requires proper equipment and a good knowledge of safety procedures as well as park rules and guidelines.

Story Pitch: A number of groups and organizations can pitch around National Camping Month. National parks will want to note the month by promoting their camping locations. In addition, retailers and manufacturers of camping equipment – including tents, sleeping bags and canteens – may encourage campers to appropriately pack for a camping trip while promoting new lines and brands. In addition, local fire departments may offer suggestions on how to safely start a fire in the wilderness as well as how to properly maintain and extinguish it. RV and camper retailers can also take this time to advertise the latest camping luxuries.

Story Hook: According to The Outdoor Foundation, more than 84 percent of camping participants also participate in other outdoor activities. How does this affect the way that families and other campers might plan their trips? Consider the following when you make your pitch:

  • Statistically, what method of camping do most people prefer?
  • What are the proper supplies to bring on a camping trip?
  • What safety requirements are necessary when camping?
  • In what ways can campers pack and store food to avoid wild animals rummaging through camp?

Tips: A park ranger who oversees campgrounds could offer tips on proper camping safety. In addition, a family who camps often may shed some light on the appropriate ways to pack for a camping trip.
