World Environment Day inspires pledging for greener lifestyles

1

Happy World Environment Day!

World Environment Day (WED) is a global environmental awareness event established by the United Nations through the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has been celebrated on June 5th since 1974.

The United Nations declared 2014 the International Year of Small Island and Developing States (SIDS), with World Environment Day focusing on how climate change impacts SIDS both locally and globally.

With the theme “Raise your voice, not the sea level,” WED 2014 is raising awareness about the unique development challenges and successes experienced by SIDS communities due to climate change.

2

To encourage people to take positive action on behalf of Small Islands and Developing States, UNEP enlisted the help of celebrity Goodwill UNEP Ambassadors Gisele Bündchen (model), Don Cheadle (actor/musician), Ian Somerhalder (actor) and Yaya Touré (soccer star) to launch a challenge to see who can rally the most registered activities for World Environment Day 2014.

Taking to social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, the UNEP Ambassadors have been competing to get as many people to pledge actions towards their chosen causes: reducing energy consumption (Cheadle), eliminating food waste (Bündchen), making greener lifestyle choices (Somerhalder), and lessening the impact of plastic waste on environment (Touré).

So who’s got the most goodwill-clout and greenest buzz?

Ian Somerhalder!

Despite his character’s preference for blood-red on TV series The Vampire Diaries, Ian’s commitment to greener lifestyle choices is resonating with fans. Fans pledging to go green with #TeamIan are dominating World Environment Day Twitter conversations.

6

Take a moment today to consider how even the smallest environmental actions can benefit local and global communities and how the choices of one person, community, and country are all related on a grander scale.

Over 2,450 people have pledged to “plant more trees, grow more kitchen gardens and just think more carefully about how the decisions we make impact our one and only Planet Earth.” (Ian Somerhalder for UNEP WED 2014)  You can pledge to go green with Ian or help Gisele, Don, and Yaya up their numbers by joining the WED Challenge yourself!

You can add your voice to the World Environment Day conversation by using the #WED2014 hashtag to raise awareness on Twitter and finding WED 2014 activities in your area!
