Summer launches and initiatives in the media industry
There have been a number of launches this summer, whether they were outlet, product or initiative, the media industry continues to strive towards growth. Here’s a look at some of the bright and shiny that has popped up over the last several months.
Meredith Corp. announced this summer that it will launch Parents Latina in Spring 2015. The English-language magazine is targeting second generation Hispanic moms. It will debut with a circulation rate base of 700,000 and will be published four times a year.
Medium, a startup publishing platform, is reportedly launching a digital magazine for September that will be entirely dedicated to music. Earlier this summer Medium also launched the digital magazine Matter.
Spafax Content marketing agency launched APEX Experience last month. The magazine, which focuses on passenger experiences, is published for the Airline Passenger Experience Association and its members. The magazine is slated to be published six times a year.
Earlier this month Toronto Men’s Fashion Week launched TOM*, a bi-annual magazine covering the best in Canadian menswear. It includes interviews with designers, visionaries and celebrities, as well as runway reports, street styles, insider previews, men’s lifestyle, arts and culture.
Outside the magazine realm, Contently launched a nonprofit foundation dedicated to investigative journalism. According to Forbes.com, the site is launching with donations. The Chicago Tribune recently launched a new website, featuring more multimedia content, endless scrolling and a mobile-first design. Meanwhile, ESPN debuted a real-time score app for the Pebble smartwatch that allows those wearing the watch to track multiple games. The watch actually vibrates when games update and scores change, reported Variety.com
Although the Boston Globe’s launch of a standalone website dedicated to Catholicism next month has previously been reported, the paper recently announced the editorial team for the new publication. Teresa Hanafin will be leading the site as editor along with John L. Allen Jr., to cover the Vatican, and Ines San Martin to cover event coverage.
Launches are usually a clear indicator of optimism and that’s something this industry could use given the struggles journalists and publications have faced.
