5 Tips for Generating Fresh Content Ideas
Writer’s block is the worst, no?
As communication professionals in the business of content creation, we want to make sure we are consistently coming up with thought leadership pieces that will be helpful for our audiences. But it can be hard to generate innovative content ideas when deadlines loom daily.
Here are five quick tips for coming up with fresh content when writer’s block hits.
1. Keep up on trends.
Stay in-the-know by setting up Twitter lists, searching trending hashtags and topics on Facebook, or by using a news aggregator such as Feedly to see the latest news from all of your favorite industry blogs.
Is there a new app everyone is talking about? Think about how it might fit in with your organization’s message. How could it help your customers? Use trending topics to get ideas for your blog posts or white papers.
2. Create list posts.
When ideas are running low, lists (like this one!) are always a useful way to generate content. Lists are easily digestible, easily shareable, and can help you to organize your thoughts on a certain topic. Just be sure the information is going to be useful for your audience.
Use social media to your advantage. Tweet or post to Facebook asking a question to your followers, and use their answers as a guide for your next blog post. Or if your organization was part of a recent event, check out the event’s hashtag and collect the best tweets for a recap post.
4. Invite guest bloggers.
Asking influencers and other experts in the space to write for you is a win-win-win—it gives them visibility, brings their followers to your site, and fills one of your content holes. As always with guest bloggers and content writers, make sure to work with someone who can add value to your brand and is respected within your industry.
5. Use data.
Get familiar with Google Analytics, and check out what on your website has been performing best. Was there a certain topic that generated a lot of traffic? Or head to your social networks to see what posts have been shared and “liked” the most. Figuring out what content has performed well in the past can help steer you in the right direction for your next post.
