3 Ways to Clean Up Your Social Media Strategy

I don’t know about you, but I like to clean things up before the year closes out. That means I’ll be tackling the ever-growing pile of papers I’ve been ignoring in my desk inbox, watering that sad, forgotten plant and even cleaning up some of my processes within my business.

How’s your social media strategy looking? I’m willing to bet it could use a little end-of-year straightening up.

Look at Your Stream and Be Brutally HonestFiles

You probably schedule your social updates without really looking at all of your updates as a whole. Take the time to do that now. I’ll wait.

Do you see any glaring issues? Maybe your Twitter stream has gone off the rails and only includes automatic updates of your blog content. Noted. Or maybe your Facebook page looks like a promotion for your company.

Whatever you discover, figure out how to improve it. The best place to start is to vary the kinds of updates you share.

In addition to those automatic posts or promotions, throw in some fun photos of your products, some casual questions and interaction with others.

Start Replying to People

Another problem with all the awesome social media automation tools we have now is that they make it too easy to not pay attention when someone’s trying to get our attention. That ends now. Not only do you need to listen when people talk to you (or about you) but you also need to reply. Promptly.

Facebook rolled out its Messages for business pages this year. Are you even seeing the notifications if someone sends a message to your brand? Add that to your to-do list to ensure that you reply promptly. Social media is just another communications channel, like your customer service phone number and email, so get on top of responding.

Straighten Up Your Scheduling

If you’ve been erratic on when you post content through social media, use this time to find a more regular cadence. Keep the social channel in mind; you can get away with a dozen or more updates on Twitter because of how it’s set up, but it might annoy your followers on Facebook if you fill their wall with your self-serving content.

Get smart and use a social media management platform that makes it easy to schedule updates in advance, and make sure you have your fresh blog content set to automatically publish across all channels.

Devoting even just a little attention on your social media strategy can make for a big payoff in 2016.
