Promotions at LA Times, Two Additions at WTMO-TV, Telemundo31

The Los Angeles Times has promoted two veteran editors and hired one, all additions to its leadership team:

  • Scott Kraft becomes managing editor. He has been with the paper for more than three decades, and will now oversee foreign, national, Washington, California and Metro news in addition to investigations and enterprise reporting. Kraft most recently served as deputy managing editor.
  • Kimi Yoshino has been promoted to deputy managing editor, overseeing sports, business, arts, entertainment and lifestyle coverage. She joined the paper in 2000, and for the last four years served as business editor.
  • Kris Viesselman has joined LA Times as  chief transformation editor and creative director, a newly created position. He comes from Congressional Quarterly and Roll Call in Washington, D.C., where she served as editor in chief.

Juliana Barbassa will join The New York Times August 1 as reporter on the international desk covering Latin America. She was most recently the managing editor of Americas Quarterly. Prior to that, she was senior Rio correspondent for the Associated Press. 

The Wall Street Journal has brought on Micah Maidenberg as a reporter on the breaking news desk. He was previously a reporting fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and before that reported for Crain's Chicago Business. h/t Talking Biz News

Benny Evangelista is no longer with the San Francisco Chronicle. He left the newspaper for a job at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Evangelista had been at the paper for nearly 20 years, and most recently served as technology reporter. 

WTMO-TV, the Telemundo affiliate for Orlando-Daytona Beach, Florida market, has announced the additions of two new multimedia journalists: Felix Pirela and Yunaisy Garcia will both report for the station’s  5pm, 5:30pm, 6pm, and 11pm weekday newscasts. Pirela made his on-air debut on June 29, and came from Venezuelan Globovision, where he worked as a reporter. Garcia’s first day at Telemundo 31 was July 16 and will make her on-air debut later in July. She was previously a content producer at Telemundo 48 in California. 

Jay Howell has been hired by  KDKA-TV and WPCW-TV, the CBS-affiliated stations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as general manager and vice president. Howell was previously the GM for KOVR-TV/KMAX-TV in Sacramento, California, and prior to that lead Media General as VP. 

Former Bankrate.com chief content officer Lou Ferrara has joined Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc.’s digital news platform Circa as chief creative and content officer, effective July 2. Ferrara has previously held leadership positions at the Associated Press and  Herald-Tribune Media Group.
