CisionScoop: Mother Jones has hired Jackie Flynn Mogensen full time as an assistant editor covering the environment. She previously spent one year as senior social media fellow at the magazine, and before that worked for the San Francisco Chronicle.
Katishi Maake is the new digital producer at Washington Business Journal, and handles digital assignments, news and feature stories and print edition features. He was previously a news intern at Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and a breaking news intern at CNN.
The Washington Post has brought on John Harden as metro data reporter covering statistical analysis of metro topics. He was previously a metro data reporter for the Houston Chronicle for four years, and before that worked at the Denton Record-Chronicle as a regional reporter.
James LaPorta has joined Newsweek as a staff writer covering national security and the Defense Department. He is also an investigative journalist working on a long-term investigative project, which is a collaboration between Frontline PBS and ProPublica. LaPorta is a former U.S. Marine and freelance journalist, whose bylines have appeared in The Washington Post and Boston Globe, among others.
ELLE has named Melissa Giannini features director. She was previously the editor in chief of the now defunct Nylon magazine for two years, and before that has worked for Spin and Martha Stewart Living. She was also a freelance writer and her work has appeared in amNewYork, Architectural Record, Bidoun, DIW, and Metro Times, among others.
Edward Cropley will join Reuters Breakingviews in August. He is currently the Africa bureau chief for Reuters, based in Johannesburg since January 2016. Before that, he was bureau chief in Southern Africa in charge of Reuters editorial operations for South Africa.
After four years as weekend anchor of Good Morning America and three years as a co-host of The View, Paula Faris will transition her role at ABC Television Network and will be reporting for GMA and other network news programs in the fall. Faris joined ABC News in 2012 after six years at NBC-owned WMAQ-TV in Chicago.
Kathy Park has joined NBC News as a correspondent reporting across all NBC News and MSNBC programming. She was most recently a general assignment reporter at KCRA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Sacramento. Prior to that, Park was an anchor and reporter in D.C. covering major events including both of President Barack Obama’s inaugurations.
ProPublica has hired Jack Gillum as senior reporter covering technology and the ways algorithms, big data and social media platforms impact civil rights. His first day was July 30. Gillum comes to ProPublica from The Washington Post, where he spent the last year as an investigative reporter. He has also worked for the Associated Press and USA Today. h/t Talking Biz News
After 25 years at NBC-owned WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, New York, weather anchor Kevin O’Connell has left the station. His contract was not extended by WGRZ-TV amid policy violation accusations and the fact that O'Connell testified in a case for a law firm he has endorsed on the firm's website.
