The Associated Press has promoted two of its journalists: Sara Gillesby has been named news director for all formats in the U.S. East region, and will lead staff in 10 states stretching from Ohio to Maine. She will be based at AP’s headquarters and has been with the newswires since 2005. Karin Laub, who has covered wars, revolutions, the plight of refugees and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for three decades as a foreign correspondent, has been promoted to the Middle East news director.
Ta-Nehisi Coates has stepped down from The Atlantic after ten years at the publication. He has been a national correspondent for the outlet since 2008, and prior to that worked for TIME magazine. Coates won the National Book Award for nonfiction in 2015 for Between the World and Me, a book that chronicles his experience of being a black man in America.
Kat Stoeffel is the new features editor for Elle digital. She comes from Conde Nast where she previously served as senior editor for two years. Prior to that, she worked as deputy ideas editor for BuzzFeed and associate editor for New York magazine's The Cut blog.
Bloomberg News has bid farewell to Emma Ockerman. She was a reporter covering U.S. equities for the First Word team and health care and insurance markets for the health team. Ockerman is an Ohio University graduate, and also interned for the Detroit Free-Press. h/t Talking Biz News
Sally Mamdooh has moved from ABC-owned KMGH-TV in Denver, Colorado to NBC's KPRC-TV in Houston, Texas as a reporter. She spent three years reporting in Denver, and before that worked for Bay News 9in St. Petersburg, Florida.
WZZM-TV investigative reporter David Bailey has announced he is leaving the station and the TV business altogether. Bailey was named an investigative reporter for WZZM-TV in 2015, and prior to that he was a reporter at CBS affiliate WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo, Michigan. WZZM-TV is the ABC affiliate in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Denise Plante has joined iHeartMedia’s KWBL-FM in Denver, Colorado as midday host. She comes from KUSA-TV in Denver, where she spent three years as the host of Colorado & Company. Prior to that, she spent a decade at KOSI-FM as on-air personality.
KARK-TV, the NBC affiliate in Little Rock, Arkansas, has promoted Susanne Brunner to co-anchor of KARK 4 TODAY. She makes the transition after serving as reporter for GoodDayAR KARK 4. In addition to her new duties, she will continue to report on education and health issues in Central Arkansas. She was previously with KLRT-TV in Little Rock.
