Media Moves at NYT & LA Times, New NBA Reporter at Yahoo! Sports
The New York Times has welcomed two new staffers, on its Metro and Culture desks respectively:
- Azi Paybarah has joined the paper as metro reporter, and also writes the New York Today newsletter. He was previously a producer at FAQ NYC, and before that spent five years at Politico as senior reporter. Paybarah has also reported for the New York Observer and the New York Sun.
- Meeta Agrawal has been appointed arts, culture and leisure editor for the paper. She was previously an editorial consultant for New York magazine, and before that spent five years at Entertainment Weekly, most recently as the deputy editor.
Vincent Goodwill is the new senior national NBA writer at Yahoo! Sports. He comes from NBC Sports Chicago, where he served as a reporter covering the Chicago Bulls since 2015. Prior to that, he spent three years at The Detroit News as a sports writer covering the Detroit Pistons.
The Los Angeles Times has promoted Angel Rodriguez to assistant managing editor of sports. He was previously the sports editor for the paper, and joined the staff in 2015 after spending a year as a deputy editor for mobile innovation at the Washington Post. Prior to that, he worked for the Cincinnati Enquirer as sports editor for two years.
Katie Ross Dominick has been named coordinating producer for the CBS political unit out the network's Washington, D.C. bureau. She was previously on the justice beat for CBS News, and before that worked on the transportation beat, and was a Washington-based producer for CBS This Morning. Before that, she worked for CNN for five years as a writer/producer.
Morning Consult has hired Claire Williams as financial policy reporter, effective Oct. 18. She also writes the morning finance newsletter. Williams comes from S&P Global Intelligence, where she has reported on the retail industry since early 2017. Morning Consult covers the intersection of Washington and the healthcare industry through a daily email briefing, polling products, and events.
Tamara Vaifanua has been appointed anchor for "Good Day Utah", the morning show on KSTU-TV, the Fox-owned station in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been with the station since 2010 and joined the staff as anchor/reporter. Prior to that, she worked for KTNV-TV in Las Vegas.
KIAH-TV, the CW station in Houston, has welcomed Sharron Melton as a reporter/anchor on "Morning Dose," which launched Oct. 22 and airs from 6 am to 9 am. Her new role marks a reformatting and relaunch of the morning show, and she will work alongside co-anchor Shannon LaNier. This is Melton's return to Houston broadcasting; she exited ABC13 local news station in 2015.
Longtime outdoor editor of the Cumberland Times-News, Mike Sawyers, has retired. He covered nature, camping, hiking as well as other outdoor activities for the Maryland paper. Sawyers has been with the Times-News for 39 years.
