Media Moves at NYT & The Journal Record, Acting Editor Named at Slate
Tal Kopan has left CNN Politics to join the San Francisco Chronicle as Washington correspondent, based at the paper's D.C. bureau. He has been with CNN since 2015 and joined the staff as politics reporter. Before that, Kopan spent three years at Politico Pro, and FOX News in Chicago prior to that.
The New York Times London correspondent, Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura, will relocate to Nairobi, Kenya and lead the paper's East Africa bureau as bureau chief. Her first job at NYT was as a part-time researcher in London in 2013. Since then, she has reported about Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, covered the referendum to repeal the abortion ban in Ireland, and the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels. Prior to joining the NYT, she was a reporter for BBC.
Russell Ray has been named editor of The Journal Record in Oklahoma City. He comes from Power Engineering Magazine, where he spent the last seven years as editor in chief. Before that, Ray was a business reporter for The Tampa Tribune, Tulsa World and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
The Indianapolis Business Journal has hired Mickey Shuey as a reporter covering real estate, tourism and sports business, effective Oct. 16. He was previously a business reporter at the Palladium-Item, a Gannett paper in Richmond, Indiana. Before that, he reported for the Star Press.
Following its recent change of ownership, the Chicago Reader has named two top editors for the print edition and digital platform, respectively:
- Anne Elizabeth Moore joins the staff as editor in chief. She is a noted author, artist, cultural critic and comics journalist. She is a former editor of Punk Planet and founding editor of Best American Comics. Since 2016 Moore has been living in Detroit on a writing residency and fellowship.
- Karen Hawkins has been named managing editor for digital. She comes from Rebellious Magazine for Women, which she founded, and where she served as editor in chief for the last six years. Before that, she worked for The Associated Press as a Chicago-based reporter.
After the recent announcement of the upcoming departure of Julia Turner, Slate has named Lowen Liu its acting editor chief. He will continue his duties as deputy editor for the outlet, a position he took over in 2017. Before that, he served as managing editor and copy chief.
CBS-owned WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio has welcomed Steve Koles as director of news and digital content. He is responsible for all news operations at the station. Koles comes from WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he served as news director. Before that, he worked for WPRI-TV in Providence, Rhode Island as assistant news director.
Matt Johnson is the new news director for WWMT-TV, the CBS station in Kalamazoo, Michigan, effective Oct.10. He replaced Steve Koles. Johnson was previously the news director for KRCG-TV in Jefferson City, Missouri, and before that spent three years at KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri as content manager.
WCVB-TV, the ABC station in Boston, will welcome Jennifer Eagan as a general assignment reporter Oct. 22. She comes from WHDH-TV in Boston, where she spent the last five years as a reporter. Before that Eagan worked at New England Cable News where she was a reporter and fill-in anchor.
