Media Moves at the LA Times & The Nation, New Writer at The Cut
Following the recent change in ownership, the Los Angeles Times is creating a Singapore bureau and reopening its Seoul bureau. With that, come a few editorial staff appointments:
- Shashank Bengali and David Pierson will open the Singapore bureau. Bengali is the South Asia bureau chief and has been with the paper since 2012. Pierson has been the South Asia correspondent since 2000.
- Victoria Kim is the new staff writer based in Seoul. She will shift her coverage from L.A.'s Koreatown to Seoul. Kim has been with the paper since 2008, when she joined as courts reporter.
Christina Goldbaum has joined The New York Times as metro reporter. She spent the last four years as a freelance foreign correspondent in East Africa covering human rights, conflict and politics. Her work has appeared in a variety of news outlets, including The Daily Beast, Agence France-Presse, USA Today, Foreign Policy, Vice, The Economist and PBS’s “NewsHour.”
The Wall Street Journal has welcomed Anthony DeBarros as data news editor out of the paper's Washington, D.C., bureau. DeBarros is a data journalism expert, who was previously the SVP of product and content of Questex, an integrated media provider of technology and business media. Before that, he spent a decade at USA Today as database editor.
Greg Kaufmann has returned to The Nation as a contributing writer covering poverty. He was previously a senior fellow for the Center for American Progress and editor in chief of TalkPoverty.org. Before that wrote the Nation’s "This Week in Poverty" series from 2011 to 2013.
Jemele Hill will join The Atlantic as a staff writer in early November. She will cover issues related to sports, race, politics and culture for both the magazine and The Atlantic Online. He previouly wokred for ESPN for 12 years, as a reporter at Undefeated, and an anchor for "SC6 with Michael and Jemele", and "His & Hers" shows.
The Cut has hired Edith Zimmerman as senior health writer focusing on health and psychology. She comes from Medium, where she spent the last year as vertical editor. Prior to that, she worked for Apartment Therapy Media. Zimmerman is also the founding editor of The Hairpin, which she helped launch on 2010.
